When you sell as many cars as Ford does, it can be easy for things to fall through the cracks. That said, with Forbes reporting over 8 million vehicles recalled last year, Ford recalls seem to have gotten out of hand. With 67 individual recalls across the board, Ford leads all brands in both units and total recalls for last year. But why were there so many Ford recalls in 2022? There are several issues relating to engine and drivetrain components as well as electrical troubles affecting several Ford models. The recall includes cars, trucks, and SUVs.

Ford Recalls over a half million Escape and Bronco Sport models

The biggest Ford recall in 2022 involved two of their most popular SUVs. Ford Escape models from 2020 to 2023 and Bronco Sport models from 2021 to 2023 were recalled for a faulty fuel injector. The recall for models with the 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbo engine is related to a potential fire risk. The issue involves the fuel injectors, which could crack and cause a fuel leak under the hood. If the engine or exhaust were sufficiently hot, the leaking fuel could ignite and create a fire.

The fix for this issue involves updating the engine control computer to detect a leaking fuel injector and to install a drain tube to allow leaking fuel to safely leave the engine compartment. 

Over 400,000 Ford F-150 models require fixes for failing windshield wipers

The second largest of the Ford recalls for 2022 involves the popular Ford F-150 pickup. Certain models from 2021 and 2022 came with faulty windshield wiper motors. The could cause the wipers to fail unexpectedly, leading to poor visibility and increased risk of an accident. Anyone with an affected Ford F-150 will receive a replacement windshield wiper motor, free of charge. Notices rolled out earlier this month, but you can check your VIN with your dealership to see if your truck needs attention.

Ford 360-degree camera failure recall for Super Duty and Lincoln Continental models

An issue affecting nearly 300,000 Ford and LIncoln vehicles involves the 360-degree camera system. Both Ford Super Duty and Lincoln Continental models from 2017 to 2020 make up this Ford recall. Degradation of the camera’s lens coating can lead to poor rear visibility. While the surround-view camera isn’t mandated, new laws passed in 2018 require all new vehicles to have rear-facing cameras. This recall will replace the rear cameras in affected models.

There are several additional Ford recalls including drive shaft failures in Ford F-150 trucks and fire risk recalls in 2015-2017 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models.
