The new 2024 Ford Edge L just revealed in China sure doesn’t look like the Edge we know and love here in the states. It’s larger, with more conventional proportions, mostly a result of the long hood. The big question is why Ford chose China to get first dibs, and will it even make its way to the U.S. at all?

Isn’t the current U.S. Ford Edge ready for a replacement?

Yes, there are some vehicles we don’t have in the U.S. for various reasons. If this were a Ford Mondeo, we’d understand. Ford says sedans don’t sell in the U.S., so forget about seeing any Mondeos come here. 

But a slick-looking mid-size three-row SUV is a different story. That segment is at the top of the SUV heap. Sizewise, it looks like it will slot under the Explorer, which is also sold in China. That’s where the U.S. Edge is positioned, too. 

And don’t forget, the original version of the U.S. Ford Edge came in 2014, with a 2019 facelift. So the current Edge has had a good, long run. Some reports indicate the Edge is being discontinued. But with this segment being so hot, we’re thinking that Ford isn’t pulling out so much as it’s killing the Edge name.

What engine options does the 2024 Ford Edge have?

While we don’t know what Ford’s plans are for the Chinese Edge, we do know about the SUV itself. It’s slightly larger than our Edge, with the largest discrepancy being overall length. The 2024 Edge is almost eight inches longer. 

Power comes in two choices according to Ford Authority. A gas-powered turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, or the hybrid version of the 2.0. Horsepower differences are 249 hp and 271 hp, with the hybrid. The hybrid also offers more torque, better fuel economy, and a 738-mile range. Active all-wheel drive is standard for either powertrain. 

What is the cabin like?

Inside, it’s a highly-coveted three-row. Almost the full expanse of the dash is made up of screens, with a 12.3 display for the driver, then a 27-inch 4K touchscreen almost extending to the passenger side door. A flat, wide center console offers up numerous storage bins, wireless charging, and a gear selector. 

The base Edge L interior gets the two-tone treatment with copper details. The premium ST-Line has black leather with red details. There is a head-up display, ambient lighting, reclining front and second-row seats, a Panoramic roof, Bang & Olufsen audio, and a gang of driver-assist features. 

Is the 2024 Ford Edge available in China now?

Styling goes with the heavy-sculptured trend, mostly mid-body. LED headlights wrap from side to side in a slim presentation. Two different lower fascias are available, with the ST-Line featuring a more aggressive design with larger intakes at each end. An interesting design detail is a skeg or fin rising up to the C-pillar from the beltline.

The 2024 Ford Edge L will hit showrooms in April in China. As for here, we think it is a great replacement for the current model, but Ford is being mum. As they say, “Stay tuned.”
