The Ford GT is a performance car that comes with exclusivity. A finite number for them will become available, but only to people who go through an application process and get accepted. So, what is Ford to do with the GT to take the excitement level of the car up another notch? How about introducing an even more exclusive special edition?

The Ford GT racing legacy

Ford’s ability to conquer Ferrari at the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1966 is legendary. Over fifty years later, movies and documentaries are still being made about the GT40. The name of the car had so much stay-power that decades later, Ford even re-introduced the car, but as the GT (sans the “40”). Since that re-introduction, the car has generated an even newer generation that switched the platform away from a V8, to a 3.5-liter V6 engine, cranking out 660 horsepower. Basically, it is the street version of a lightweight racecar.

What people may not know is that the race at LeMans was not the first race the Ford GT40 had won. In fact, the car also took part in the inaugural 24 hours race at the Daytona International Speedway in February 1966. It beat Ferrari there too. So, Ford does not want that memory to be forgotten. To that end, a new special edition Ford GT was revealed today.

Daytona-inspired Ford GT Heritage Edition

According to Ford’s press release today, the newest Ford GT Heritage Edition is a tribute to the Daytona 24 Hour win, where drivers, “Miles and Ruby led nearly every lap of the 24-hour race and outpaced the competition by 30 miles.” The 1966 endurance-winning Ford GT40 MK II racecar had a white, black, and red livery. This special edition mimics that mixed with the exposed carbon fiber that drapes the vehicle. There are also one-piece, forged aluminum, Heritage Gold, 20-inch wheels that sit in front of red Brembo brake calipers.

The inside of the vehicle also received some unique touches to this special edition Ford GT. Black Alcantara® suede wraps the instrument panel, headliner, and steering wheel rim. Red anodized paddle shifters peek out from behind the steering wheel and Alcantara suede performance seats round out the cabin of the supercar.

But wait, an upgrade is available for the already rare car

If that was not enough, there is a special upgrade package available within the special Heritage edition. There are 20-inch exposed carbon fiber wheels with a gloss red accent. Additionally, the Brembo calipers change to gloss black and get red lettering. 

Deliveries and pricing

The 2021 Ford GT deliveries are expected to begin in early 2021. Unfortunately, pricing was not released in the press release. Also, pricing is not available on Ford’s website. However, there is a nifty configurator. So, fixing one up virtually to satisfy a supercar dream is possible. In either case, virtually or not, the Ford GT is a serious performance supercar that traces its legacy back several decades. Paying honor to the Daytona win is respectful. So, this new special Heritage edition is a nice tribute car that will certainly get collectors salivating.
