Ford and Rivian Just Broke up-and Ford Electric Trucks Will Be Just Fine
Whether you’re a lovesick teen or one of America’s largest automakers, breaking up is hard to do. Ford and Rivian planned on collaborating on electric vehicles, but plans have changed. Now both American automakers have decided to work separately, and that’s perfectly fine. Here’s why Ford doesn’t need help creating great electric vehicles.
Ford doesn’t need Rivian to produce amazing electric vehicles
Ford embraced electric automaker Rivian and made a huge investment into the company. The Blue Oval invested hundreds of millions into Rivian back in 2019. It invested even more money during later funding rounds. Rivian’s historic initial public offering proves that Ford and Amazon made the right decision backing the company.
Rivian’s IPO was record-breaking and news of its valuations sent tremors through the investing world. The electric automaker may be acending to greatness, but that doesn’t mean Ford needs any help producing electric vehicles. The Blue Oval once planned to crate a Rivian-powered Ford vehicle but it has since decided that it would no longer need to collaborate on an EV. The big question is why doesn’t Ford want Rivian’s help anymore?
Rivian may have done extensive research and spent millions on the EV design and production process, but Ford is already enjoying success with the popular Mustang Mach-E. Ford F-150 Lightning pre-orders have skyrocketed proving that there is a high demand for the electric pickup truck.
Rivian made an amazing electric truck, but it still isn’t a Ford
The 2022 Rivian R1T is an amazing electric pickup truck. It makes a mind-blowing 800 horsepower using its quad-motor powertrain system. The R1T will get 300 miles of driving range according to Car and Driver.
The Rivian R1T is an electric adventure truck. The pickup has conquered Hell’s Gate at Moab. It has amazing off-road capability thanks to its powerful motors. The truck seems to be able to get through just about anything.
Rivian’s first electric truck is the first mass-produced electric pickup truck in America. That being said, it’s still not a Ford. Most R1T models that were delivered are owned by Rivian employees. Since the electric truck starts upwards of $68,000, it isn’t likely to be seen on most American roads or streets anytime soon.
Ford and Rivian will both be just fine after their split
When it comes to electric vehicle production, the fact of the matter is that Ford and Rivian simply don’t need each other. Both companies have produced amazing electric vehicles. The future of EVs is bright and Ford and Rivian both have their own respective roles to play.
The average Ford owner isn’t going to be shelling out $68,000 for an electric truck. Instead, the Ford F-150 Lightning will be a welcome alternative to the Rivian R1T. Ford and Rivian may not be making any EVs together but both companies will be just fine in the years to come. The real question is, which automaker will dominate the electric vehicle market?
