The Ford F-150 Lightning has quickly become one of the most talked-about vehicles in the game. In fact, the Ford Lightning is so popular that Ford has been overwhelmed with reservations to the point that it has to take some pretty extreme measures to keep up with demand. Between the chip shortages and other supply chain issues, Ford has made some difficult decisions. Hopefully, it put its eggs in the right basket.

How many Ford F-150 Lightning reservations are there?

The Ford Lightning has already gotten over 200,000 reservations in a short time. To reserve a Ford Lightning, buyers needed to out a $100 deposit. According to CarScoops, Ford expects around 80 percent of these reservations to convert to actual buyers.

Ford’s initial production numbers were set at 40,000 units by early 2023. Seeing as how that wouldn’t cut it, Ford bumped that number up to 80,000 before this massive surge in reservations. Now Ford is having to make drastic changes to those production figures. In fact, Ford has nearly doubled its production goals since the initial doubling.

That’s right. Ford says it is dedicated to getting F-150 Lightnings out the door, so now, by mid-2023, there will be 150,000 Lightnings in production.

How much does the Ford F-150 Lightning cost?

You know Ford did something right considering how many people want the F-150 Lightning despite its price. The 2022 Lightning electric pickup truck will cost anywhere from $39,974 to upwards of $95,000, plus a $1,695 destination charge. That is a lot of money for a pickup truck, but the people have not only spoken, they are screaming.

The price and insane demand make Ford’s aggressive production push make a little more sense. In order to make good on this production promise, Ford will have to rework its current 2023 production plans and invest heavily in tooling and staff to attempt this lofty goal.

This push comes at a time when EV production is already ramping up for Ford. This includes a previously-announced $250 million investment in September and 450 new jobs as they’re gearing up for increased production. Ford also said it was in partnership with the UAW and other EV suppliers to have the required inventory needed for the production of the Lightning.

What is the Ford F-150 Lightning’s range?

All F-150 Lightnings come standard with the dual-motor all-wheel drive system making 426 hp and 775 lb-ft of that sweet electric torque. This configuration is paired with the 98-kWh Standard Range Battery, which Ford estimates should get 230 miles of range on the base F-150 Lightning Pro, Lightning XLT, and Lightning Lariat trims.

According to MotorTrend, Ford will offer an extended range package for a serious upcharge. For an extra $19,500, the Lightning can get the optional 131-kWh Extended Range Battery. This option gives the F-150 Lightning 563 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque, while range jumps up to a Ford-estimated 300 miles on the XLT and Lariat and 280 miles on the top-level F-150 Lightning Platinum.

Ford seems to have another Bronco on its hands

Ford has had the envious problem of making cars people want faster than Ford can even make them. We have seen multi-year waiting times for the Ford Bronco because of insane demand and multiple production issues. Now it looks like the Ford F-150 Lightning might have a similar path.

This would explain why Ford is taking such drastic measures to meet the demand on the Lightning by routing all of its resources to aid EV production. Hopefully, there will be plenty of electric trucks to go around come 2023.
