The Ford Truck With the Best Sales Increase Isn’t the F-150
There are plenty of appropriate titles for the popular Ford F-150 truck. It’s the breadwinner, king, top dog, and brings the bacon home. It has been one of the best-selling trucks for decades. But a different truck has the bigger sales increase than the Ford F-150.
Ford Maverick growth surpasses the Ford F-150
Surprisingly, the Ford truck with the biggest sales increase is the Ford Maverick, not the Ford F-150. The F-150 might be feeling growth pains from the Maverick as it continues to explode for the third year. It might have to share its crown.
During the third quarter of 2022, the F-150 moved 161,498 models. In the third quarter of 2023, it sold 186,974 trucks for an 11.77% increase.
During the first three quarters of 2022, the F-150 sold 458,547 models. In the same time period this year, it moved 561,110 units, representing a 22.37% sales increase.
In the third quarter of 2022, the Maverick sold 13,049 trucks, and in the third quarter of 2023, it sold 23,931 units for an 83.3% sales increase.
In the first three quarters of 2022, the Maverick sold 51,802 trucks and moved 66,430 models during the same period in 2023. This represents a 28.24% increase.
While the F-150 still has the lead, the Maverick is growing at a faster rate. It looks like the decision to increase Maverick production is paying off as demand remains rampant.
The only truck in the lineup that isn’t invited to the party is the Ford Ranger. It moved 12,453 models in the third quarter of 2022 and only 7,385 units in the third quarter of 2023, for a 40.70% sales decrease.
How are the F-150 and Maverick different?
The Ford F-150 and Ford Maverick have massive size differences. The compact Maverick is 19.7 inches long and 76.2 inches wide. The F-150 is up to 243.5 inches long and up to 86.6 inches wide.
Families may appreciate the F-150’s ability to easily fit up to six passengers while the Maverick can comfortably fit four people. The rear seat should be reserved for shorter passengers.
When properly equipped, the 2024 F-150 can tow up to 13,500 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,455 lbs. The 2024 Maverick can tow up to 4,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,544 lbs.
Both trucks have an available hybrid engine. The F-150 hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway. The Maverick hybrid receives an EPA-estimated 33 mpg in the city and up to 42 mpg on the highway.
Pricing is also quite a bit different. 2024 F-150 models cost between $36,570 and $111,550. Maverick models cost between $23,400 and $34,855.
Does the Maverick or F-150 have a better resale value?
Currently, the average Ford F-150 model is expected to retain about 57.3% of its value after five years of ownership. That’s pretty good, but other trucks like the Toyota Tundra come ahead. The Tundra is expected to retain 73.3% of its value.
The average Ford Maverick model is expected to maintain 61.7% of its resale value after five years. It falls behind the Toyota Tacoma, which could retain 66% of its worth. But the Maverick ranks eighth on the list of 10 cars with the best resale value.
While the F-150 didn’t make it on this list, it still holds its value extremely well. Also, supply and demand play a role. As production of the Maverick increases, demand could cool off.
