Many Ford Ranger builds focus on improving the midsize pickup’s off-road and overlanding capabilities. US customers can’t get the Ranger Raptor, but PaxPower’s version and APG’s Prorunner are the next best things. But, while the Ranger’s 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is plenty powerful, it may not be enough for some. For those potential customers, Ford Performance’s Ranger Power Pack may be the solution.

Normally, the Ford Ranger’s 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 270 hp and 310 lb-ft. That’s enough, Motor Trend reports, to let the truck go 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. That’s several seconds faster than the Jeep Gladiator and Honda Ridgeline. However, Car and Driver reports the Chevrolet Colorado can match the Ranger’s time.

The new Ford Performance Power Pack, though, will likely change that. The kit consists of an ECU tune, a K&N high-flow air filter, and a retune of the 10-speed automatic, Jalopnik reports. Installing the kit does mean your Ranger will have to run on premium fuel, Road & Track reports. The result, though, is a Ford Ranger that produces 320 hp and 355 lb-ft.

Autoblog reports Ford Performance has also made a similar kit for the current Ford Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V8. In addition to the ECU tune, the kit comes with a larger throttle body and a Ford Performance cold air intake. This bumps the V8’s output from 460 hp and 420 lb-ft to 479 hp and 438 lb-ft. The Mustang kit also increases the amount of low-end torque, to improve acceleration off the line.

Pricing and availability

Both the Ford Ranger and Mustang kits can be ordered through your local Ford dealer. And, if installed there, or at an ASE/Red Seal-certified shop, Motor1 reports, both kits come with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty. In addition, both the Ranger and Mustang kits are 50-state emissions legal.

The Ford Ranger Power Pack retails for $825, and the Mustang kit at $1,275. Interestingly, though, noted Ford tuner Mountune—which previously tuned the Fiesta ST hatch—is offering the Ranger kit for $749 as of this writing.

Alternative Ford Ranger tuning kits

In terms of price, Stage 3 Motorsports’ $499.95 kit is actually cheaper than the Ford Performance one. And the Stage 3 kit gives the Ford Ranger similar performance boosts: with it, the engine produces 312 hp and 369 lb-ft. However, the Stage 3 Ranger kit isn’t CARB-certified.

Roush, which has already tuned the F-150 and Mustang, also has a Ford Ranger tuning kit. With a cold-air intake, high-flow air filter, and ECU tune, Roush can boost the Ranger’s engine to 284 hp and 363 lb-ft. But, while it does have a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, it costs $935, $110 more than Ford’s kit.

Hennessey Performance also offers a modified Ranger, in the form of the VelociRaptor. Hennessey reflashes the ECU and installs a performance exhaust, boosting the Ranger’s engine to 360 hp and 440 lb-ft. The result, Hennessey claims, is a Ford Ranger that can go 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. The VelociRaptor also features fender flares, a 4” ICON coil-over lift kit, 18” alloy wheels, BFGoodrich KM2 tires, and new bumpers.

However, Roadshow reports it costs $19,950. Add in the cost of a new Ranger FX4 Lariat, and that rises to $64,950. That’s about $11,500 more than a base Ford F-150 Raptor. Also, Hennessey is only making 500 VelociRaptors for 2020.

So, if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to give your Ranger some extra speed, the Ford Performance kit is one of the better options.
