Tesla offers Free Tesla Supercharging this 4th of July for those who want to embark on a road trip. Tesla says to avoid the rush of the festivities, drivers can charge for free along some popular travel routes in the U.S. Free charging is only during off-peak hours, so don’t forget that.

From Friday, July 1 to Monday, July 4, drivers in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Texas can take advantage of free Tesla Supercharging. California has the most chargers, with a large portion of them in the southern part of the state.

In Arizona, California, and Nevada, drivers can charge a Tesla Model 3 or any Tesla model before 9:00 AM and after 6:00 PM. Drivers in Oklahoma and Texas can charge for free before 11:00 AM and after 8:00 PM.

Use Trip Planner to find locations for free Tesla Supercharging for the 4th of July

Tesla suggests using your Trip Planner to navigate to the free supercharging. Using in-car navigation, drivers can precondition the battery before arriving at a Tesla Supercharging location. This works with any charging location, not just the free ones.

Tesla received a bit of backlash for the number of chargers offering free charging for the 4th of July holiday. In holidays past, Tesla included many more states in the free charging. For instance, there were more states included for the Christmas holiday.

It isn’t clear how Tesla determines which Superchargers will offer free charging for each holiday. At this point, any free Tesla Supercharging for the 4th of July weekend is a welcome offer.

Where can you charge an electric vehicle for free?

One of the best resources for finding electric vehicle charging options is an app. PlugShare and EVPassport are good places to start. Looking at the PlugShare free EV station map, there are more than 500 free chargers in North America.

Visitor Centers near the highway, energy-focused businesses, and colleges pop up a lot. Museums, casinos, and parking garages also show up on the map. A good place to find free chargers is also through a highly populated shopping plaza or a hotel. Malls or shopping centers often have a charger by a large anchor store or department store. Many outdoor locations offer free charging to encourage people to visit, such as State Parks. New high-volume restaurants such as Perkins or Mcdonald’s might offer an EV charger or two.

If you plan on taking your electric vehicle on a trip for the 4th of July weekend, plan your trip out in advance. It might be busy along popular travel routes and at participating free Tesla Supercharging locations, so pack your patience and some extra snacks.
