When one thinks of unpleasant car odors, typically, the cabin of a car comes to mind, whether it’s from pets, smoking, or food that was left in a car for too long. This is why there is a multitude of air fresheners available for cars. However, car exhaust fumes also create an undesirable odor. This is especially the case when you start up a car, let it idle, or have the windows open. Also, when you park your car in a garage, the odor from exhaust fumes can linger.

Power Plus, a company from California, has a unique solution to overcome the odor from car exhaust fumes. As detailed by Jalopnik, Power Plus sells a line of fuel fragrances. Along with creating a more pleasant smell, the fuel fragrances reduce irritation, according to the company:

“Power Plus fuel fragrances are designed to eliminate unpleasant exhaust odors and the eye, nose, and throat irritations that come with them. Pre-mix with fuel or pour directly into your tank before filling up. Power Plus Lubricants fuel fragrances are safe for all internal combustion engines, injectors, carburetors, 02 sensors, and catalytic converters. They do not inhibit or enhance engine performance. One 4 oz. bottle treats up to 35 gallons of alcohol/methanol, 20 gallons of gasoline or nitromethane, or 10 gallons of diesel fuel.”

Are car exhaust fumes toxic?

In addition to creating an unpleasant odor, car exhaust fumes are toxic, particularly if exposed to them for long periods of time and inhaled in large quantities. As detailed by ScienceABC, toxic chemicals in car exhaust fumes include “carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, formaldehyde, benzene, and soot.”

While it’s difficult to completely avoid these toxic chemicals from a car exhaust, you can at least limit your exposure. Don’t idle your car for too long in an enclosed space. Wait to roll down the windows until the car starts moving. Also, be sure to keep your car well-maintained. This includes regularly changing the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, and PCV valve. Of course, the most foolproof way to avoid car exhaust fumes is to buy an electric car, which produces zero emissions.
