Volvo prides itself on being different from its German competition. Its cars, SUVs, and Crossovers follow a minimalist Scandinavian style, making them as distinctive as they are stylish.

When it comes to Volvo’s flagship sedan, the S90, luxury, and safety come to the fore. The S90 has some stiff competition in the form of Mercedes’ E-Class, BMW’s 5 Series, and Audi’s A6, but it distinguishes itself quite well. If you are drawn to Volvo and want to see the best they offer, then let’s look at a fully loaded S90 luxury sedan. Here’s what you can expect when you tick all the options boxes.

2022 Volvo S90 Recharge

The Recharge is the top trim for the S90 sedan and comes with the T8 eAWD hybrid powertrain. The base price starts at $61,050 and offers a choice of two styles, the Inscription, and the R-Design. The Inscription adds more luxury and comfort touches, while the R-Design ditches the chrome in favor of black-out trim for a more performance driving vibe.

The drivetrain is a unique plug-in hybrid design that combines a 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor on the rear axle. The gasoline engine produces 313 horsepower, while the electric motor adds 142 horsepower for a combined 455 horsepower. The T8 drivetrain is also very torquey, which helps the big S90 accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

You can drive the S90 Recharge in pure electric mode, and Volvo claims you will get about 50 miles of range. Running as a hybrid, the EPA rates the S90 Recharge at 63 mpg-e. If you have a heavy right foot or operate the car on just the gasoline engine, then expect 28 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

2022 Volvo S90 Recharge standard features

As you would expect with a premium luxury sedan, the standard feature list is immense. Starting on the outside, black is the standard color, with all other options carrying a $695 charge. 19-inch 10-spoke wheels and a panoramic sunroof are included.

Moving to the inside, leather and high-end finishes abound. Napa leather is standard, and the seats are heated, cooled, and ventilated. There is four-zone climate control with power sunshades on the rear doors and rear window.

A 12-inch touchscreen infotainment display is standard and pairs with a Harmon Kardon 14 speaker, 600 watt sound system, with an integrated subwoofer. Bluetooth connectivity is standard, but unfortunately, only Google services are available. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration, but Volvo says it is coming.

On the safety side of things, the S90 Recharge is an IIHS Top Safety Pick + with top marks in the crash test. It also performed well in crash avoidance, earning superior marks for front crash prevention. Volvo includes a full complement of active and passive safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, lane departure assistance, adaptive cruise control, post-impact braking, and parking assistance.

Starting with the style, either the Inscription or R-Design package are included in the base price. Neither is a bad option, and the choice depends on your personal style.

Premium paint adds $695 to the base price, and choosing the 20-inch eight-spoke wheels costs an additional $800. There are four choices for interior color, all of which are included in the base price.

The Lounge package ($2,050) gives you massaging front seats and ventilated rear seats. That also includes the Climate package, which provides you with a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats. Ticking the box for the Advanced package ($1,900) adds a heads-up display, power trunk lid, 360-degree camera, and a super-efficient air filtration system. The Protection Premier package ($550) adds wheel locks, rubber floor mats, and a trunk liner to the S90.

The Four-C Adaptive Air Suspension package ($1,200) automatically adjusts the suspension based on the load and driving conditions. The Polestar Performance package ($1,295) retunes the drivetrain for more performance with improved gearshifts and throttle response.

Finally, adding the Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound package ($3,200) gives you a 19 speaker, 1,460-watt high-end stereo system.

With all the options boxes checked, a fully loaded 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge costs $73,785.

Is a fully loaded 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge worth it?

$73,785 is a lot of money but is significantly less than a fully loaded Mercedes E Class or BMW 5 Series. Both the Mercedes and BMW move more toward the performance end of the sedan spectrum, but the S90 Recharge is no slouch. It is just as fast to 60 mph as the Mercedes-AMG E53 and costs nearly $30,000 less.

On the technology side, Volvo’s infotainment system lets it down in comparison to others, but if that’s not your top priority, the distinctive S90 might be a great luxury option.

Volvo built the S90 to stand out from its German rivals. It does quite well in terms of style, comfort, and luxury amenities. It may not have the handling poise and balance of the BMW, but if you’re the type of car buyer that wants something different, it would be hard to pass up the brilliant S90.
