Gas Powered Mustangs Gone By 2027-End Of Muscle Cars
If you think of American muscle cars as fast sedans with big V8s then the end is nigh. A new report says that Ford will go completely electric with the Mustang by 2028 at the latest. That means gas-powered Mustangs will be gone by 2027 if not before. While it is hard to even consider the Mustang with anything other than a gas-powered V8, you knew it was coming.
Ford made an electric Mustang easier to swallow with the Mach-E
Ford sort of made it easier to swallow with the new Mustang Mach-E. The first vehicle to deviate from what a Mustang has always been was built all-electric. Since Ford didn’t build its Mustang SUV as anything other than an EV says it all.
This report is from AutoForcast Solutions as first reported by Autoline. But there is more bad news for the Mustang faithful. We have been expecting an all-new Mustang within the next year or two at the latest. Dubbed “S650” Autoline is now saying that this new Mustang has been delayed.
The next Mustang should have a seven or eight-year shelf life
That could mean the next, new Mustang might be all-electric. There is no way that Ford would develop a completely new Mustang only to have it replaced by another all-new EV in just two or three years. The expectation is that the next Mustang should have a seven or eight-year shelf life. And if Ford is going electric with the Mustang it wouldn’t make sense to try and electrify a gas-powered version.
The original source of the S650 Mustang information was Ford itself. It was revealed in a Ford job listing. The S650 was expected to be out by 2022 as a 2023 model year Mustang. Of course, this could be a bit sketchy as no test mules all camoed up have been spied. By now something would have surfaced to indicate an all-new Mustang is under development.
Ford has been laying the groundwork for an electrified Mustang
But maybe Ford has been laying the groundwork to help consumers accept an electrified Mustang? The 2019 SEMA Show in Las Vegas featured an all-electric Mustang called the Mustang Lithium Project. And last summer Ford made headlines with the Mustang Mach-E 1400. Cranking out 1,400 hp a 56.8-kWh battery was tied to seven electric motors for the Mach-E 1400.
While the torque and power of an electrified Mustang would probably be unmatched by any gas-engine copy, it just isn’t a muscle car without the roaring sound of a V8 nestled under the hood. But, we’re headed toward an all-electric world of transportation. That is, at least until the next clean alternative rolls around.
The good news is there should be plenty of V8’d Mustangs ripping around from the decades past. But it won’t be the same without the traditional Mustang wail of a V8 engine.
