General Motors settles in court over Duramax diesel engine failure

General Motors has been battling a class-action lawsuit related to Duramax diesel engine failure and faulty fuel pumps for years.

Plaintiffs, or drivers of various Chevrolet truck and GMC trucks never gave up and can now rejoice as they get reimbursed for expensive repairs.

While 11 plaintiffs with get $5,000 each, their lawyers will split a $15 million payout. GM is reimbursing every owner who had to pay for fuel pump repairs out of pocket.

Also, the settlement only helps folks who bought trucks from the following seven states:

  • California
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas

Plus, all current owners of affected Duramax diesel vehicles will get warranty coverage for the Bosch C4 fuel pumps. The warranty covers 12 months from the final approval date of the class-action lawsuit or 200,000 miles from the vehicle’s purchase date.

Former owners could receive compensation for overpaying for trucks, but owners still have to cover half of the repair bill.

The lawsuit claims that Duramax diesel engines used in Chevrolet and GMC vehicles from 2011 and 2016 were equipped with Bosch fuel pumps, which allegedly can’t run on American diesel fuel.

They were designed for European diesel, which is thicker due to having more lubricants. As a result, thinner American diesel may cause air peacocks inside the pumps, leading to metal-on-metal contact.

As a result, the fuel pump could become damaged and send metal shavings into the engine, causing it to fail. Also, if drivers had the pump replaced, dealerships installed that exact same type of pump. This fails to address the problem.

General Motors is also facing another class-action lawsuit regarding Bosch fuel pumps because of allegedly being falsely advertised as clean and environmentally friendly.

Plaintiffs claim that diesel trucks have higher emission ratings than gas-powered models. Defeat devices and other tactics may have been used to boost sales. Stay tuned for updates!
