After the automotive industry has struggled with a shortage of trucks and other vehicles for years, it’s time for some good news. Well, the news that General Motors has too many Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra models is good for drivers and bad for manufacturers.

General Motors may have an oversupply of Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks

Since 2020, buying trucks has been a huge pain. There have been massive inventory shortages and prices are still unbelievably high.

But a problem that General Motors might be facing could be good news for drivers. Reportedly, it has an oversupply of Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks.

General Motors said it would temporarily halt production to prevent having too many Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models on the dealership lots.

Popular trucks like the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado 1500 are finally getting easier to find. According to Cars.com, the average inventory of full-size trucks at dealerships increased by 177% between April 2022 and April 2023.

Inventory for the Silverado hovered around 16,800 in April 2022, but increased to 65,100 in April 2023, for a 287% inventory increase.

The GMC Sierra 1500 struggled with about 5,400 models in April 2022, but that increased to 29,800 models in April 2023 for a 452% increase.

Also, the Ford F-150 inventory increased from 31,400 in April 2022 to 82,000 in April 2023, which is a 161% increase. The Ram 1500, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tundra also experience inventory growth, just in smaller amounts.

Having too many Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks along with other models is helping prices slow down. People are buying cars for about 32% above MSRP instead of the record-high of 48%.

However, we are still facing inflation that’s leading to higher prices. Some dealerships are offering better incentives to get things moving, though.

Perhaps if this trend continues, prices could start dropping at a faster rate. Hopefully, inflation eases. But having too many Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks could also close production plants for weeks!

Stay tuned for updates.
