General Motors Recalls 323,000 HD Trucks With Tailgate Issues
Uh oh, we have another recall that could put your heavy-duty truck in the shop. General Motors is recalling roughly 323,000 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra HD models because of a dangerous tailgate problem.
General Motors recalls heavy-duty trucks with tailgate problems
General Motors is facing a massive problem with its heady-duty trucks because the tailgates may randomly open. As a result, roughly 323,300 HD models are under recall. Also, GM has issued a stop sale until the models at dealerships can be repaired.
The recall includes Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 models. The tailgate switch may malfunction and cause the tailgate to unlatch while the truck is in park.
This may cause the tailgate to open while the trucks are in motion, allowing unsecured cargo to spill out the back. This creates a road hazard and increases the risk of accidents and injuries.
The Silverado 2500 HD can carry a payload of up to 3,975 lbs and the 3500 can carry up to 4,682 lbs. So, that could cause a huge mess.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that water can get into the switch, causing it to malfunction. You can enter your 17-digit VIN to see if your Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra HD truck is involved.
GM will begin notifying owners at risk via mail starting on March 18. You can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 with any questions that you may have. The GM number for this recall is N23246400.
If your truck is at risk you will have to visit a dealership to have the tailgate assembly switch replaced for free.
You do not have to retire to the dealership where you purchased your truck, a local option will be fine. However, we recommend scheduling an appointment in advance to avoid longer waiting times.
GM shared that they have received about 136 complaints about the tailgates becoming unlatched. It’s also aware of minor three reports of minor property damage and one report of a minor injury.
