Earlier in October Motorbiscuit covered a Toyota recall regarding failing fuel pumps. At that time, nearly 2 million vehicles were included in the action. Now comes word that the recall has been expanded. It affects models from both Toyota and Lexus from as far back as 2013. The number of vehicles has now chimed in at 5.84 million units.

What is the recall action for?

Defects in a fuel pump may cause premature failure. Consequently, the vehicle may stop operating and stall. Such a failure can cause dangerous conditions for motorists while traveling. Also, the vehicle may not be able to restart. 

What vehicles are affected in the recall?

This expanded recall includes both Toyota and Lexus models. The production of vehicles with defective fuel pumps reaches back to 2013. What is being done about the defective fuel pumps?

The defective fuel pumps will be replaced with improved fuel pumps free of charge by Toyota. The company will reach out to affected customers. Those that have questions or want to schedule a service appointment can reach out to Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

To find out if your vehicle is involved in the recall, the Toyota website has a VIN search function here. The NHTSA also has recently launched an app that will notify people if their vehicles have been affected by a recall. You can find information about the app here. 

Recall origins began in January

This recall originated in January. Since then, the automaker has made announcements to add more vehicles as further investigation was performed. According to Car Complaints, this most recent announcement comes as a class action lawsuit is also ongoing. The implication is that the manufacturer of the fuel pumps, Denso, knew in 2016 about the component’s defect. The total is now 5.84 globally affected vehicles. Of those, 3.34 million are in the United States.
