Here’s Why GM Could Beat Ford and Tesla In Electric Truck Sales
General Motors is determined to be a contender in the electric vehicle space. The automaker has produced several new electric vehicle nameplates. GM hasn’t sold as many electric vehicles as Ford. It certainly hasn’t sold as many EVs as Tesla. The year 2023 could be the perfect opportunity for General Motors to close the gap between itself and other brands in the EV space.
The Chevrolet Silverado EV has a huge role to play
The Chevrolet Silverado EV will be the first fully-electric Chevy pickup truck. The Silverado EV will compete with existing electric trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and Lordstown Endurance. It isn’t the first to market, but like the electric trucks that arrived before the Silverado EV, it has the potential to be the most impactful.
Thus far, electric pickup trucks have been incredibly difficult to buy because of affordability and availability. Order banks for the F-150 Lightning were quickly filled. Now, the latest F-150 Lightning model year is significantly more expensive. The Rivian R1T Launch Edition started at $85,000. Lordstown’s electric pickup truck, the Endurance, starts at around $65,000.
So, many of the electric pickup trucks that are actually available aren’t affordable. The Tesla Cybertruck has already been pushed back three times. Electrek claims drivers have already placed 1.5 million Cybertruck pre-orders. This makes the Silverado EV’s arrival even more exciting because it has the potential to be the first affordable, readily available electric pickup truck in America.
Will the Chevy Silverado EV become the most popular electric pickup truck?
Chevrolet may not produce the most popular full-size pickup truck, but it can produce the most popular electric pickup truck in the future. The Silverado EV could fill a huge gap in the market.
Chevy’s website claims that the Silverado EV has an estimated MSRP of $39,900. If the American automaker doesn’t change this price, then the Silverado EV WT will be the most affordable electric pickup truck on the market when it arrives.
According to GM Authority, a study concluded that a large percentage of Silverado EV reservation holders don’t actually plan on purchasing the electric pickup truck when they have the opportunity. So, if thousands of reservation holders don’t purchase the electric truck, it should be much easier to purchase than rivals.
An affordable electric pickup truck that can be purchased simplistically seems too good to be true for many American drivers. GM has every incentive to make that dream come true to become more competitive in the EV space. Chevrolet’s Bolt and Bolt EUV are two of the most reasonably priced EVs on the market. An affordable electric truck wouldn’t deviate from GM’s game plan based on the Bolt and Bolt EUV’s pricing.
Chevrolet’s electric truck should have an amazing year
The Chevy Silverado EV WT base model is expected to arrive in spring 2023. The impressive RST trim should arrive in fall 2023. GM’s electric pickup truck should have a great year because it’s available in a trim level that’s accessible to most American drivers. Affordability and availability can make this Chevy truck the most popular electric truck on the market by a long shot.
