The future is here! GM finally confirmed that an electric Chevrolet Corvette is on the way. On Twitter, Chevy recently posted that an electrified Corvette will be available as early as 2023. A fully electric version will be available sometime after that. No word on the electric Corvette price or specs yet.

GM says the electric Chevrolet Corvette is confirmed for as early as next year

Chevrolet has been quietly behind the scenes and working on a new and improved Corvette. CNBC says that GM President Mark Reuss confirmed, “We will have an electrified Corvette next year, so it’s coming very quick.” He also said this new electric Corvette would be “in addition to the performance that Chevrolet and Corvette have been known for,” which leaves room for interpretation.

Depending on the electric Corvette price, this will probably be one of the more popular electric cars hitting the market. President Joe Biden even mentioned the idea of an electric Chevrolet Corvette during one of his speeches last year. If Chevy wants to get a piece of the pie, quickly moving this one to market is a good idea.

Reuss’s comments sound like a plug-in hybrid, or something similar might be planned first. That would give Chevrolet the chance to wade into the EV pool slightly slower. The video also shows the front wheels moving before the rears, confirming an all-wheel drive setup.

The Chevrolet lineup is missing an Electric Corvette

GM previously announced that it wanted to sell only electric vehicles by 2035, but it planned on having 30 new EVs by 2025. That explains the short timeline for the release of this electric Corvette. The automaker plans to spend $35 billion in the next three years to achieve that. The new Corvette will use the same Ultium battery platform that all other GM EVs will use.

GM engineered the new battery to charge quickly, fit into a variety of cars, and offer flexibility for drivers. It will fit in various larger SUVs and trucks like the All-Electric Silverado truck and GMC Hummer EV. The Hummer EV Pickup is already rolling out, while the Silverado EV will be available in Fall 2023.

Some photos are likely to come soon of the electric Chevrolet Corvette with this announcement. In the teaser video above, a gasoline-powered V8 engine can be heard. That probably means this is a hybrid option, even though it looks identical to the current production gas-powered Chevy Corvette sports car.

GM is working on new EV battery plants to ramp up production

There are plans for two new battery plants in the U.S. to keep up with demand. Since Chevrolet has been slow to start on the electric rollout, it needs to move quickly.

In another interview with CNBC, CEO Mary Barra said, “There are several growth engines in General Motors, and we’re going to just keep pushing ahead and accelerating them like we’re doing today of announcing a faster pivot to EVs.” Keep an eye out on GM’s social media platforms for more hints of the electric Chevrolet Corvette or its hybrid counterpart.
