Is the Chevy Bolt officially dead after its billion-dollar recall?

The Chevy Bolt and Chevy Bolt EUV were part of a massive recall. The recall resulted in a billion-dollar loss for General Motors. If a billion dollars can’t put out the fiery controversy surrounding the EVs, what can? It turns out that even that much cash money can’t save the Bolt, and GM is ready to call its time of death.

The mess surrounding the Bolt all started in 2021 when consumers began to report battery fires caused by overheating. At first, these incidents seemed isolated, though they certainly warranted concern. One by one, more reports of battery fires made headlines until General Motors had to act. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and the Bolt was burning brighter than GM could handle.

General Motors issued a mass recall for all 2017-2022 Bolt EV models and 2022 Bolt EUV models because of battery cell manufacturing defects. The Bolt was well-received when it debuted in 2017, but this recall controversy left plenty of owners feeling uneasy.

The Chevy Bolt walked so the Chevy Equinox EV could run

The Chevy Bolt may have started as the cornerstone to GM’s electric future, but the American automaker will clearly look at other options for phase one of its grand plan. Chevy is rolling out several electric vehicle options in the years to come. Upcoming models include the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV, Chevy Equinox EV, and Chevy Blazer EV.

According to Road Show by CNET, General Motors’ Orion Township facility that produces the Bolt and Bolt EUV is being repurposed. It will now serve as a second factory to produce Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV models.

Will GM’s fiery little electric vehicle be missed?

General Motors hasn’t announced the death of the Bolt and Bolt EUV nameplate officially, but all signs point to the electric vehicle’s demise. CEO Mary Barra and GM fans are looking toward to the future of GM EVs, and that future involves new models.

There’s no way of telling whether consumers will miss the Bolt and Bolt EUV or not if GM halts production, but the automaker is sure to offer better options in the future. Electric vehicle technology is still in its infancy. Unfortunately, before automakers produce the ideal electric vehicle, we’ll have to experience some duds.
