GM Now Sells More Full-Sized Trucks Than Ford
Ford loves to tout that for 45 years the Ford F-150 has been the best-selling truck. Well, is that changing? Ford’s not wrong, the F-Series trucks still top sales charts. But, General Motors is now selling more full-sized Silverado and Sierra trucks than Ford, if you add the Chevy and GMC brand sales together.
Sales figures for 2022 show GM in the lead
According to new sales figures, Chevy sold 141,000 Silverado trucks in the second quarter of 2022. GMC sold 62,000 trucks in the same quarter. Ford still sold more F-Series trucks, at 159,000, but if you’re doing the math, you figured out, too, that that means GM sold 203,000 full-sized trucks. Ram came in third with 118,000 trucks sold in the second quarter, according to GoodCarBadCar, a firm that tracks sales data.
To be clear, those 203,000 trucks are from two different brands. But, the Silverado and the GMC are in many, many, ways the same truck. The GMC is, traditionally, the luxury version of the two and comes in Escalade-rivaling trims like Yukon Denali. This year the truck market got more competitive, too, with a new Toyota Tundra stealing some full-sized truck sales.
GM’s trucks got a refresh for 2022, and that helps sales
One sure fire way to boost sales is to suddenly make last year’s truck look old. Both trucks, the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra 1500, saw a refresh for 2022. That refresh updated the front end, added several new features, and a new interior. The new trucks have a new 13.4-inch touchscreen set in a horizontal panel that leans towards the driver on higher trim levels.
Also, GM still offers a Duramax diesel in the Silverado and Sierra. Interestingly, Chevy is still selling the “old” truck, the pre-facelift version, as the LTD or Limited version as a new 2022 truck.
GMC also added an ultimate luxury version version in the Sierra Denali Ultimate
The 2022 GMC Sierra saw the addition of a new AT4X trim that is designed for off-road duty with new Mulitmatic DSSV dampers, front and rear electronically-locking differentials, and a new Terrain Mode that allows one-pedal crawling. For the first time in 2022, the Sierra can be ordered in Sierra Denali Ultimate trim that adds leather trim over nearly every surface, 16-way seats, and a 15-inch heads-up display.
Ford recently update the F-150, too
Of course, Ford updated the F-150 for the 2021 model year. The new 14th generation F-series truck looks similar to the to the previous 13th generation. However, under the hood several things were updated, including an updated gas-hybrid engine, and a new standard 10-speed transmission. On the inside, the trucks got a larger screen and a digital instrument panel.
