GM Recall So Big it is Not Publishing How Many Are Affected
Does it seem that sometimes GM likes to rewrite the rules? We noticed that on the heels of a major pickup truck recall, it has issued another big recall. But it is not indicating how many vehicles are in the recall. So, we wonder if this recall is so big that GM doesn’t want you to know how big. Let’s look at which vehicles are part of this recall and from what years, to better understand.
The recall covers a wide range of GM vehicles
This covers:
1. 2018-2021 Chevy Camaro,
2.2019-2021 Silverado 1500,
3. 2021 Suburban,
4. 2021 Tahoe,
5. 2019-2021 GMC Sierra 1500,
6. 2021 Yukon, and
7. 2021 Yukon XL.
This is an emissions recall and involves engine calibration, but not all of these models are part of it.
Only vehicles that have the optional dealer-installed performance air intake are involved. In those, the engine control module may not have the correct calibrations. It is mostly unknown what hazards this creates because GM did not provide that information.
This action takes in some of the most recently produced models on each GM truck and SUV brand. Those 2021 models still on dealer’s lots will already have this fix before they are for sale. Owners of these models will need to bring their vehicles into dealerships to have the proper adjustments made. All vehicles in this recall are still under warranty, so the adjustments are made at no charge.
The GM Tech Link website answers some questions
What we do know comes from the GM Authority. It looked at the GM Tech Link website to find answers. On the site, it mentions “GM Accessories that require updated calibrations must have the calibrations installed to ensure proper operation of the new accessory components as well as other related vehicle systems.” It goes on to say that if the proper calibrations are not done following the installation of an accessory, then this “may not only limit system performance but may also leave the vehicle non-compliant with regional government regulations.”
So the ECU inside of these GM vehicles will need to be recalibrated. Since GM is withholding information, if you are curious we have a list of contacts you can try.
