GM Thinks About 2022 GMC Hummer EV Production Increase to Keep up With Shocking Demand
The GMC Hummer EV has already gotten 65,000 orders, far exceeding what GM was expecting. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV was a shocking model when it debuted, but despite the shock and nearly unbelievable features, most people thought it would be a niche machine. After all, we are talking about a Hummer. We, and GM, were wrong. Now GM is considering a production increase to keep up with the shocking demand.
The GMC Hummer EV is more popular than GM expected
According to Duncan Aldred, global vice president of GMC, the reservations number is much higher than the automaker’s initial expectations. In fact, the number of reservations reached over 65,000 units. This means that new orders wouldn’t be fulfilled until 2024.
Despite GM being ahead of schedule on the current production plan, the demand means GM will have to figure out a way to pick up the pace and figure out how to increase production.
“Production’s actually slightly ahead of plan, and we’re putting things in place now actually to expedite that as well, so we can deliver these reservations quicker than we originally thought,” Aldred told CNBC here during a media event. “We’re seeing momentum building.”
Reservations is only step one
There have been more Hummer EV reservations than GM was expecting, but the reservation to order conversion is at 95 percent, which GM says was also more than expected.
Seeing as how the pickup truck version of the Hummer EV launched first, it has the lion’s share of the orders. However, the recently announced SUV version is also currently on sale, but the first units aren’t likely to see driveways until 2023. GM wants desperately to get units to its customers much faster than that.
