For 2024, the GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV are getting a “3X” trim. Currently, it offers Edition 1, EV2X, and EV2 trims. What comes after EV2X? Why, it’s EV3X, of course. So, what comes with the new 3X package? 

What new features come with the GMC Hummer 3X package?

For starters, rolling stock is upped to 22-inch wheels and 35-inch All-Terrain tires. With these additions, GMC says the range is 355 miles. It says the combo “offers sportier and more on-road-oriented driving dynamics.”

With serious off-roading in mind, the 3X trim features the Extreme Off-Road Package. This includes more underbody cameras, more skid plates, and rocker protection. And within the rocker protection, GMC adds assist steps. With 18-inch wheels and Mud-Terrain tires, and a range of 329 miles. That’s the same as the Edition 1 range.

Is GMC taking reservations for the Hummer EV?

All Hummers feature 1,000 hp EV power and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. They also pack three motors, one in the front and two in the rear. The Edition 1 and off-road 3X have a 7,500 lb towing capacity. With the 3X and 22-inch wheels, towing capacity increases to 8,500 lbs. 

So all of that is great. But based on multiple sources, including CNBC, the Hummer has 90,000 reservations. That’s great and shows that it has struck a chord with off-roaders wanting to join the EV ranks. And GM had to close reservation orders at that number. But GMC has shown it is unable to ramp up production to any level that even hints at mass production. 

When will the Hummer 3X trim be available?

From its production launch in 2021, through 2022, GM has built 850 Hummer EVs, based on GM’s sales report for 2022. As of last month, GMC is building 12 Hummers a day. So this raises a few questions. 

First, how does GMC factor into a backlog of 90,000 reservations with this latest news of the 3X trim being added? Does it mean the 3X trim will be available after the 90,000 reservations are filled? Or can reservation holders change their reservations to include the 3X trim? 

GMC has no information on the availability of the 3X trim. And there are no price figures for the 3X Extreme Off-Road nor the 3x with 22-inch wheels. So everything about the Hummer EV seems to be in this murky void. 

How many Hummer EVs is GMC making now?

Going to the GMC Hummer website, it only states that its “reservations are currently full,” and then asks those interested to submit their pertinent information to “stay informed.” Again, it is a void without much beyond specifications and trims. So in all, it is a big question mark when GMC will be able to ramp up production to a reasonable level, with 90,000 reservations to fulfill. 

At its current rate of 12 Hummers built in any given day, and thinking that production would continue six days, a week, for 52 weeks in a year, the production comes to 3,744 built. Even at 50 a day six days a week for a year, the number sits at 15,600 a year. So, what do you think about the strange case of the GMC Hummer EV?
