The GMC Hummer Already Has a Recall
Hummer is barely eeking out its all-electric Hummer, and there is already a recall? Yes, the NHTSA has announced a recall for certain GMC Hummer SUVs. The thing is that GM has only now started connecting those with reservations with actual Hummers.
Now many Hummers are recalled?
In fact, it delivered only one at the end of 2021. They are slowly rolling out. So how many will this recall actually involve?
As it turns out, just 10. Dealers have already made repairs to the Hummers. “Immediately following the recall decision on March 3, 2022, GMC HUMMER representatives proactively contacted these customers and made arrangements to replace the taillamps on these vehicles,” a spokesperson told Carscoops. “Repairs have been completed on all 10 vehicles.”
What was the Hummer recall for?
The recall was over software affecting the taillights. Sometimes it would allow only one light to work. Then, other times none lit. Finally, in some instances, they couldn’t be turned off and remained on. If the taillights stop functioning, it also affects brake lights, turn signals, backup lamps, side marker lights, clearance lamps, and, of course, the taillights.
Very few Hummers have been built, so it makes sense that few would be affected. It is a black eye for Hummer and GM, though it is fairly benign as recalls go. Production of these Hummers took place between October 5, 2021, and January 20, 2022. GM says all post-January 20 “were built with parts containing corrected software or were repaired prior to shipment.”
GM has said that it expects to sell about 1,200 of the Edition 1 Hummers before beginning production of the lower-model versions. The Edition 1 sold out in 10 minutes. Increases in production estimates have occurred.
How many Hummers will GM make this year?
GM CEO Mary Barra told Reuters in February that GM has increased production estimates for 2022 to 23,000 units. As of February, there are 59,000 reservations for the EV. These include Edition 1, EV3-x, EV2-x, and EV2 trims. GM’s new Factory Zero plant is the home of the Hummer. Production there will include the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV, and the Cruise Origin robotaxi. The taxi begins production next year.
GM is gunning for Tesla. Barra said publicly in January, “Our plan creates the broadest EV portfolio of any automaker and further solidifies our path toward U.S. EV leadership by mid-decade.” That plan includes the 2024 Silverado EV pickup and 2023 Cadillac Lyriq, which just went into production this week.
