Years after being discontinued, the GMC Hummer is making its return. While we were initially shocked by the new GMC Hummer EV, we were also excited. But this Hummer truck remains true to its roots, which could be good and bad. 

The GMC Hummer EV may struggle with older problems 

At first, the Hummer blew up in popularity. Celebrities drove it. It was in movies, it was a music video star, and more. But the Hummer was discontinued in 2010 due to a variety of issues. In fact, the decline of sales led to General Motors going bankrupt. 

This is why the return of the GMC Hummer EV could be seen as a risky move. The first Hummer could cost over $100,000, depending on the model you picked. That was pretty darn costly for a giant SUV. 

Also, it was huge. The Hummer had a difficult time fitting into parking lots and tight city areas. It weighed over 10,000 lbs too. So, despite being well equipped for off-roading, it would sink in the mud. 

Being bulky also made it a little slow. Plus, it got about 10 mpg, so it was the opposite of environmentally friendly. Last but not least, the interior quality was lacking. Cheap plastics filled the space. 

Does the new Hummer have the same problems? 

Yes, and no. Because the GMC Hummer EV is electric, it doesn’t burn through gas. It has an estimated range of about 300 to 250 miles. This isn’t bad, but rivals like the Rivian R1T have a 400-mile range. 

The Hummer EV is also insanely fast. It is expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about three seconds. It continues gaining speed at a rapid rate after reaching 70 mph. So, it should be more fun to drive than its predecessor. 

However, it’s still massive. It weighs about 9,000 lbs. According to Cars.com, the Hummer EV feels heavy despite having a quick acceleration. Also, we’re worried about its weight when it comes to off-roading. 

On a positive note, the Hummer EV has four-wheel steering for off-roading. It allows you to turn up to 7.2 feet tighter compared to driving with two-wheel steering. So, engage this function in a tight parking lot. 

Also, the Hummer EV is still expensive. It starts at around $79,995. The Ford F-150 Lightning begins at about $40,000 for the work truck model. Are enough luxury, power, and capability included with this price? 

What features does the electric Hummer have? 

The GMC Hummer EV is loaded with value. With a torque figure between 1,000 and 1,100 lb-ft, it could tow between 7,500 to 11,000 lbs. It could carry a payload of up to 3,500 lbs, too, making it pretty strong. The official figures haven’t been released. 

Because the Hummer EV uses GM’s Ultium battery-pack tech, it has an 800-volt electrical architecture with a 350-kilowatt fast-charging capability. It can add up to 100 miles of range in 10 minutes. 

The interior is inspired by the Apollo 15 Lunar rover that GM helped engineer. It looks like it includes plenty of premium, high-quality materials. It includes a 13.4-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. 

We can’t wait for the Hummer EV to officially hit the streets and more. This will help us determine if it’s a hit or a miss, especially when it comes to off-roading.
