The range an electric vehicle (EV), especially an all-electric truck or SUV, can handle on a single charge is one of the first considerations on a prospective buyer’s mind. Fortunately, several EV trucks, including the GMC Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, and Ford F-150 Lightning, have enough range to keep you on the road for hundreds of miles. Of these three, you’re best off with the GMC Hummer EV, as it has the most electric driving range.

What the 2022 GMC Hummer EV has to offer

The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 sports the same massive size and attractive exterior styling as its gas-powered counterparts and has a similarly robust powertrain. As per Jalopnik, it’s fueled by a 212.8 kWh Ultium battery paired with three motors that produce 1,000 horsepower and a combined fuel economy of 47 MPGe (51/43 MPGe city/highway).

According to MotorTrend, the Hummer EV Edition 1 can also hit 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds. While the Edition 1 starts at $112,595, its power and fuel economy are strong arguments in its favor. Also in its favor are its panoramic moonroof and plush interior styling. Additionally, you’ll also benefit from a 13.4-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital cluster, and a MultiPro tailgate.

The Edition 1 trim is also automatically outfitted with the Extreme Off-Road package for those looking to go off-road. This package equips the Hummer with 18-inch wheels and 35-inch tires, an adaptive air suspension that lifts the vehicle up 6 inches, and plating that protects the battery. Furthermore, the Edition 1 comes with four-wheel steering, allowing the vehicle to engage in a “Crab Walk” and maneuver diagonally. This feature is especially helpful on jagged terrain.

How the Hummer EV Edition 1 stacks up

When comparing the GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 to vehicles like the Rivian R1T and the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Hummer’s battery size ensures its performance outstrips that of its rivals. The R1T’s battery is 128.9 kWh, while the Lightning’s is 131.0 kWh.

Meanwhile, the 212.8 kWh battery under the Edition 1’s hood ensures a range of 329 miles. The R1T’s range is only 314 miles, and the Lightning’s is just 300 miles. Additionally, while the R1T gets a better combined fuel economy of 70 MPGe, you’ll be able to get farther in the Edition 1 on a single charge.

The R1T likely gets better fuel economy because it’s a lighter vehicle. The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 has a curb weight of 9,063 pounds, which is nearly a ton heavier than the Rivian. Just the Edition 1’s battery alone weighs 2,923 pounds, which is heavier than most subcompact sedans.

More specs and features of the GMC Hummer EV Edition 1

Despite its massive size and weight, the GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 is not the most powerful option for towing and hauling. MotorTrend notes it’s only been rated for a 1,300-lb payload and 7,500 lbs of trailering max. Even though its speed and handling are impressive, this Hummer is not an ideal heavy cargo and equipment transporter.

However, prospective buyers will be more than pleased by its other features, from the removable moonroof panels to the crab-like agility of the Edition 1. The Hummer EV Edition 1 also sports the latest version of SuperCruise, GMC’s entry into semi-autonomous driving. Unlike many other semi-autonomous systems, SuperCruise does allow you to take your hands completely off the wheel under certain conditions.

If the $112,595 price is outside of your comfort zone, no worries. Pre-orders for the Edition 1 sold out quickly. So, GMC is making more affordable versions of the Hummer EV available in the next couple of years. In the Fall of 2022, a less feature-rich version of the Edition 1 will hit dealerships for $99,995 with a different name. An $89,995 mid-tier version will be available in Spring 2023, and a $79,995 entry-level two-motor version will be on the market in Spring 2024. And while the two-motor version may lack the range of the higher-tiered variants, even the less expensive versions of the Hummer EV will likely have a larger range than the Rivian R1T or the Ford F-150 Lightning.
