The GMC Hummer EV Weight Might Disqualify It From Some Markets
Everyone knows the new GMC Hummer EV SUV and Pickup are big, but how big is too big? GM says it wants to sell the Hummer EV in Europe, but it won’t be that easy. Since the GMC Hummer EV weight is almost 10,000 pounds, you might technically need a commercial license to operate it in Europe.
What is the 2022 GMC Hummer EV weight?
In case you missed it, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV weighs a ridiculous 9,063 pounds. The gross weight rating (GVWR) comes in at 10,660 pounds. That’s one of the largest consumer vehicles available right now, if not the largest. That is also part of the problem. The Hummer comes in an EV SUV and an EV Pickup option. The SUV is capable of 830 hp, and the Pickup has 1,000 hp. Both have around 11,500 lb-ft of torque.
While GM is big in the U.S. right now, it pulled out of European markets some time ago. Bloomberg says sill sells some Cadillac vehicles through a different Swiss brand, but that is the scope of its limited sales. GM thinks returning to these markets with electric vehicles might make the transition easier.
The European Union’s strict emissions regulations were a major reason for pulling out of the market. GM might be able to sidestep those emissions issues by only offering electric vehicles. However, the electric Hummer poses one significant problem to that plan.
The GMC Hummer EV weight is well over the licensing limits in Europe
According to Jalopnik, a regular European driver’s license allows drivers to operate a vehicle with a GVWR of up to 7,716 pounds. The electric Hummer with nothing in it still comes in at 1,347 pounds over that limit. While Europe doesn’t have the CDL, which stands for Commercial Driver’s License, you probably would need the equivalent license. There are a few C-level options that depend on vehicle weight that might work for the Hummer EV.
This might fall into the large goods vehicle license simply due to the weight, even though it wouldn’t be a commercial vehicle. Hummers have been sold in Europe previously and have exceeded that weight, but it isn’t clear how that happened. Did everyone slide under the radar? Does the E.U. not care that much? Maybe the golden days of sliding under the radar are gone.
Licensing is stricter in some areas than others, but a GMC Hummer EV will attract attention immediately. But this poses an interesting question for U.S. buyers, should a regular license cut it for driving the mammoth Hummer EV?
The future is unclear for these electric trucks and SUVs
The GMC Hummer EV can stop as necessary, or it wouldn’t be allowed on the market. But how long until a situation arises in snow or slick conditions and a Hummer EV makes the news? The automaker will cross that bridge when it arises.
GM wants to return to the European market sooner than later, but it hasn’t indicated how the Hummer EV will fit into the puzzle yet. Perhaps it won’t matter at all because of the electric vehicle aspect of it. Deliveries for the sport utility vehicle are ramping up here in the U.S., so be on the lookout for a silent but gigantic electric Hummer in your rearview, especially if you live near Detroit, Michigan.
