GMC Recalls 740,600 Terrain Crossovers; Ford Recalls 200,000 F-150 Pickups, SUVs
Earlier today Ford recalled almost 160,000 2021 F-150 pickups over faulty windshield wipers. Now, it has just been announced another recall of 200,000 F-150s has been issued. Also today, GMC announced it is recalling over 740,000 Terrain SUVs in a dispute going on between the NHTSA and GM.
Why is the GMC Terrain recalled?
The Terrain recall covers 2010 to 2017 models for headlight reflections causing glare, increasing the likelihood of an accident. GM earlier this month made a request to the NHTSA not to fix the problem. That request was denied.
This stems back to 2019 when the NHTSA said the Terrain was not in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108. One of the issues SS108 addresses is distracting reflections. GM maintained the reflection problem was not a safety issue.
Why did GM appeal the recall?
The NHTSA’s response was “certain weather conditions such as snow and fog could result in light from the noncompliant lamp causing veiling glare to other motorists driving.” When the Terrain was redesigned in 2018, the headlight problem went away.
After the denial, GM posited that there is a small area where the light beam might be “brighter than the maximum designated.” According to Automotive News, GM is still developing a solution. It will begin notifying owners later in April.
Which Ford F-150s are involved?
As for the Ford F-150 recall, it too involves older trucks and SUVs. Some 2016 to 2018 F-150s and 2016 to 2017 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs are affected. The recall from 2020 involved almost 300,000 2014 to 2017 F-150 trucks.
“The brake master cylinder may allow brake fluid to leak from the brake master cylinder front wheel circuit into the brake booster,” the NHTSA recall says. Leaking into the brake booster means harder pressure must be applied to the brakes. It also means it may take a longer distance to stop. These changes could cause unsuspecting drivers to crash.
Ford says there have been four reports of “low-speed/low-impact accident allegations with no injuries.” All of the vehicles recalled have the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. Owners will begin to be notified toward the end of April.
