“Gran Turismo” builds on the popularity of one of the most iconic racing video game franchises ever and tells the story of a corner-ready racer from an unlikely source. However, as open to keyboard experts and seasoned gamers as the movie might be, it features some substantial supercars and race-ready weapons. What kind of cars are in the Gran Turismo movie?

As fans will expect with a racing movie, “Gran Turismo” features many, many track-ready cars. Here are 10 of the most noteworthy performers with screen time in the video game homage.

According to MotorTrend, many of the cars in ‘Gran Turismo’ are GT3 cars, from a Chevrolet Camaro GT3 to a high-revving Ferrari 458 GT3. However, only some vehicles on the list got remotely comparable screen time to the crowd-favorite Nissan GT-R. For instance, in a few scenes, you just get a glimpse of these GT3s doing battle on the track, like a McLaren 720S GT3 attempting to overtake a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. 

Moreover, one of the first on-screen presences is a Ligier JS PX, an 825-horsepower French racing build. Ligier says the JS PX in the movie is a “unique sports prototype” weighing just 2,006 lbs. Of course, the automotive stars of the film are the Nissan and NISMO contributions, specifically the iconic R35 GT-R. It’s not a surprising dynamic, given the tenured relationship between the Gran Turismo franchise and the Japanese marque. Gran Turismo is on its seventh video game iteration, and Nissan race cars have been there every step of the way. 

Is ‘Gran Turismo’ based on a true story?

The 2023 “Gran Turismo” film is based on the story of Jann Mardenborough, a young video gamer and car enthusiast. In Mardenborough’s story, he wins the Nissan GT Academy Contest, a competition that started in 2008. 

In the Nissan GT Academy, contestants compete to earn a spot as a professional racecar driver. Further, as you may have guessed, the spot is on the Nissan racing team.  

Can you drive the cars from the Gran Turismo movie in the games?

If you like the list of cars from the film, the game has many of the same racecars. Gran Turismo 7 is the latest game in the franchise and includes hundreds of cars, new and old. Of course, it isn’t the only option in the racing simulator space; Forza also allows car fans to enjoy consequence-free driving.
