If you’re a fan of DeLorean because of the iconic model from the Back to the Future movie franchise or just because you like its cars, we’ve got great news. Italdesign, the company responsible for the look for the original DeLorean DMC-12, just released a new teaser for its reboot. Although no specifics are available yet, the company said it would reveal the car later this year. What we do know is that an electric DeLorean reboot is coming.

Electric DeLorean reboot to be unveiled in 2022

Italdesign posted a brand new teaser video in celebration of its 54th birthday. Celebrating this anniversary with a big bang by posting the trailer is a pleasant surprise. It starts with some text stating, “the future was never promised,” which instantly gets us excited. Referencing the future instantly points at a new DeLorean since its claim to fame is the Back to the Future movie franchise. Next, within a dark background, the winged doors of a familiar model open upward.

Throughout the front of the car, a line of light travels across the surface. It traces the iconic doors and the newly redesigned front fascia, which looks familiar yet different. Finally, the video transitions to more text, this time reading “DeLorean Motor Company.” In the end, the DeLorean website is displayed where those interested can sign up to receive updates about the incoming vehicle.

The new DeLorean is electric

As initially pointed out by Motor1, the DeLorean website hints at the new model’s powertrain. It says the company is taking a “journey to electrification,” which we’ve heard so often recently. Whenever an automaker says something along these lines, there’s only one thing they could mean. The new DeLorean DMC-12 (or whichever title the model takes on) will be an electric vehicle.

Along with the new teaser video, Italdesign posted a teaser image back in January. It showed a similar silhouette of the vehicle with the winged doors open. In this image, however, the DMC logo was visible on the front of the car. The same cannot be said for the new teaser video. The vehicle has softer lines, curvier doors, and other slight differences from the original in both the image and video.

Originally, the DeLorean was a failure

Back when the original model was released, it was a complete failure. Production only took place from 1981 to 1982 and ended because no one was buying the model. It wasn’t until a few years later, in 1985, that Back to the Future made the DeLorean popular by using it as a time machine. Now, it’s one of the most iconic vehicles of all time, and people will be interested in owning one.

This isn’t the first time there was an attempt at a DeLorean revival. In 2007, the company’s owners hand-built a small number of new ones. Then again, in 2017, they attempted to assemble more using the original parts. According to Motor1, there were enough parts for 300 of them. However, this new electric model looks like it will enter mass production, and we think it’ll do quite well.

As one of the most iconic cars of all time, an electric DeLorean will be very popular. Although we don’t know much about the quality or specs of the car, we’ll find out more later this year. Italdesign’s intriguing teaser video gives us just enough to want more. That’s how we know that an electric DeLorean reboot is coming.
