The Grumman LLV Is an Iconic USPS Mail Truck
The Grumman LLV truck has long been an iconic part of the United States Postal Service. As a dedicated mail truck, it is devoid of most creature comforts and has an extremely utilitarian design. Starting in 2023, there may be a new mail truck coming to USPS. So, we felt it only right to highlight a few key features of the Grumman LLV delivery vehicle and just what makes it such a mainstay vehicle on American roads.
When was the Grumman LLV introduced?
The Grumman LLV was introduced in the late 1980s as a replacement for the Jeep DJ. It was in production until 1994, and the USPS bought over 100,000 units to help with the delivery of mail. The LLV was built in Pennsylvania and it shares its platform with the Chevy Blazer. Models were also sold to other countries, but the main buyer was the United States Postal Service.
The original lifespan of the Grumman LLV was set to be 24 years. But, if you are a resident of the United States, you are likely still seeing this mail truck pulling up to your house in 2022. The LLV in Grumman stands for “Long Life Vehicle,” and clearly it is living up to its name.
What engine is in the USPS mail truck?
During the production of the Grumman LLV, two different engines were used. At first, the truck featured a 2.5-liter engine, known as the “Iron Duke.” Later, a 2.2-liter engine was placed in the LLV. Both engines came paired to a three-speed automatic transmission. And that was to provide a better driving experience at lower speeds. This makes sense because mail trucks are not necessarily functioning in high-speed situations.
The front suspension of the LLV is similar to that of the Chevy S-10 pickup truck and Chevy Blazer. But, don’t expect this mail truck to be exciting or nice to drive. As noted by MotorTrend, it lacks basic features like an air conditioner. And, the stock heater is prone to premature failure.
What is replacing the Grumman LLV?
As of February 23, 2021, the next USPS mail truck will be from Oshkosh Defense. It will be known as the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle or NGDV. Currently, most of the models on order will have a traditional combustion engine. But, the Biden administration is pressuring USPS and Oshkosh to outfit these new trucks with an electric powertrain. That way, there is an improved chance for added efficiency.
Orders of the NGDV are expected to arrive in 2023, but there could easily be delays. As this vehicle arrives at area Post Offices, the Grumman LLV will likely be a thing of the past. But, it will not be forgotten. Most Americans do look fondly on the United States Postal Service, and the LLV has long represented this government agency. The NGDV may look different than the LLV, but we do hope it can carry on the legacy of the Grumman. There’s just something special about seeing a mail truck pull up outside, knowing that you are about to get a package or important piece of communication.
