Hate Minivans? You’ll Love The Mitsubishi Delica Bushmaster
Yeah, we know minivan sales are dying here in the US. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be cool providing they look like this Mitsubishi Delica “Bushmaster.” If you’re not familiar with the Delica it’s a small van that many countries get, but not the US. That’s because as we’ve stated minivans are not selling here. But that doesn’t mean we don’t want one. How is this any less cool than a Raptor? Or a lifted, maxed Taco? No, there’s nothing wrong with this daily.
The Bushmaster is a product of Platinum Vehicle Sales In Australia
This started as a standard white D5 delivery van from Japan. This is the fifth generation of the Delica which started in 2007. Imported into Australia, the folks at Platinum Vehicle Sales performed the makeover. They are known for taking used imports from Japan and turning them into something not originally intended by their manufacturers.
This particular Delica had just under 28,000 miles on the ticker, so it’s a relatively low-mile van. With the 25-year import law in the US, you can pick an an earlier Delica through Delica USA.
The 5th-Gen Delica has two engine options
Two choices of engines are available with this example powered by a 2.4-liter gas engine. There’s also a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel if you’re looking for an oil burner. Platinum added paddle shifters to control the CVT transmission.
A JAOS nerf bar was added up front with a light bar running the width of the roof. Attached to the Whispbar roof rack is a rooftop tent with a side awning. In the back, you’ll find a ladder for roof access and a tow bar.
These are three-row minivans with four-wheel drive
Delica vans come with three rows of seats, which makes carrying seven people doable. Making better sense is folding the back row of seats and using the space for storage. With all rear seats folded there’s room for a double bed mattress.
The Delica van came with four-wheel drive with diff locks, but no low range. The suspension was lifted and Platinum added 16-inch CSA black alloy wheels wrapped in Maxxis 980 Bravo AT tires. Oh, and they wrapped the whole mess in matte orange and gray.
Those low-hanging side steps act as protection for the engine and driveline. Standard Delica ground clearance is around eight-plus inches. So these steps may be a bit too low for serious off-road shenanigans.
Platinum added a ton of aftermarket bits to upgrade the Delica
Inside Platinum added leather seats, high-gloss wood finish on the dash, a small infotainment screen for audio and satellite navigations, and curtains for the rear windows. The rear doors have been upgraded with electric assist to open and close. Basically Platinum is upgrading the spartan Delica with the convenience we expect in a contemporary off-roader.
Though it can be a bit sketchy taking a vehicle not available in the country you’re traveling in many Mitsubishi pieces are common with many models. That, and Mitsubishi’s rep for fairly rugged stuff makes it easier to consider.
With so many accessories available for outdoor life it would be easy to personalize a Delica for your own wants and needs. Plus, you’ll have something you won’t be seeing every month or even every year for that matter.
