Trying to find a new Ram 2500 for sale? We feel for you. The shortage continues. The latest big truck to face a shortage is the Ram 2500 heavy-duty truck, especially if you want to get a Cummins diesel in your truck. Ram isn’t alone in facing a shortage of trucks, but it looks like the chip shortage that forced Ram to idle plants earlier this year is finally having an effect on dealer inventory.

The chip shortage has affected every manufacturer

The big Ram 2500 seems to be in short supply at dealerships after the company was forced to idle plants last year.

The chip shortage first hit heavy-duty Rams, as well as Grand Cherokees and Dodge cars last year, but it seems that dealers are still having trouble keeping up with the high demand for the trucks. Dealers know that these trucks are selling at a premium, too. One local dealer in Albuquerque, N.M., is marking up Ram 2500 HD trucks by more than $3,500. But that dealer is lucky because other dealers in the state don’t even have a Ram 2500s for sale.

The trucks are so hot right now that a local dealer in Roswell, N.M., is selling a 2021 Ram 2500 Laramie for $72,000. That’s about $2,400 over the cost of a new 2022 Ram 2500 HD Laramie diesel quoted using Ram’s online ordering system.

According to Donlen, a firm that tracks automotive production, you can’t even order a new 2023 Ram 2500 until July, but ram won’t begin building those trucks until October of this year.

The 2022 Ram Power Wagon was hit hard, but for different reasons

The Power Wagon is Ram’s 2500 off-road beast. It’s kind of like a super-sized Ram Rebel, with an integrated winch, a lift, front- and rear-locking differentials. In Ram’s case for the Power Wagon, it seems like the Power Wagon is simply too popular for suppliers to keep up with, and that’s what’s causing the shortage. Power Wagons start at $62,715 if you can find one.

The Ram 2500 HD has a base MSRP of $42,775 for the Tradesman work truck. But, with options, the price can increase significantly. The upgraded Big Horn version starts at $46,895, Laramie at $58,475, Limited Longhorn is $66,045, and the Limited is $70,710. The 6.7-liter Cummins inline six-cylinder is an $8,595 option. The black-out Night Edition is a $2,795 appearance package, while the sport appearance package is $995. A number of safety and technology packages are also available that add heated seats, power mirrors and a lot more.

The 2500 HD is one of Ram’s most capable trucks

Most big trucks are rated not in how many niceties the interior has (though the Ram has a lot) but in their ability. The Ram can be ordered with a big gas-powered V8 or Cummins Diesel. After a complete redesign in 2019, the truck won Motor Trend’s truck of the year for two consecutive years.
