TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development. With the TRD Pro line, Toyota offers its race-winning engineering to off-roading enthusiasts. Here is every vehicle Toyota offers in its TRD Pro lineup for 2022.

The Toyota Tacoma is a legend for its off-road 4WD capability. It’s fitting that the top-trim Toyota Tacoma is the TRD Pro. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro promises to be the most capable Tacoma yet.

Like previous Tacoma TRD Pro’s, the 2022 edition rides on 16-inch TRD Pro black alloy wheels. It also enjoys an upgrade to FOX internal bypass shocks and a locking rear differential. It also has a suite of off-road driver aids including Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) with crawl control (CRAWL).

All-new for 2022 is a factory lift kit. The Tacoma TRD Pro is 1.1-inches higher up front and 0.5-inches higher in the rear. This difference works like a sort of leveling-kit. Toyota upgraded the suspension with a forged upper control arm and the result is capable off-road and mannered off-road.

The Toyota Tacoma’s V6 makes 278 horsepower; the truck weighs up to 4,550 pounds. You can opt for an automatic or manual transmission. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro starts at $46,135.

2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

The 4Runner is Toyota’s mid-size SUV that shares a chassis and powertrain. The TRD Pro trim level gets the same FOX bypass shocks, upgraded springs, and locking rear differential. The 4Runner version also g ets 17-inch rims and a roof rack.

The good news is that you can option a 4Runner with a two-passenger third row which makes it a seven-seater. The bad news for off-roaders is that its a bit heavier than the Tundra with worse visibility.

One way Toyota really improves off-road visibility is through its trail cameras and driver aids. In Toyota lingo, the trail camera is the Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM). The vehicle also has CRAWL and MTS. You can set your terrain type and the vehicle will use ABS to keep your wheels from slipping. You can also set a speed with the CRAWL off-road cruise control and the vehicle will creep along on its own so you can focus on steering.

The 2022 4Runner TRD Pro’s V6 only makes 270 horsepower, but this SUV weighs in at 200 pounds more than the Tacoma: 4,750. Opting for the SUV version of this chassis also bumps the MSRP to $52,420.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is all-new, it is the first model year of the full-size truck’s third generation. This truck shares a weight-saving, fully-boxed frame with the Toyota Land Cruiser. Its composite bed drops the weight even more. But its Land Cruiser similarities don’t stop at the frame: the new Tundra also has the new Land Cruiser’s rear coil springs and twin-turbocharged V6.

Off-road enthusiasts are excited about the new Tundra. Several trims, including the TRD Off-Road package SR5, feature all of the Tacoma’s off-road driver aids–for the first time ever. The Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) will help drivers navigate off-road terrain despite the big truck’s high hood. Systems such as CRAWL and MTS may make navigating trails much easier.

Toyota will not offer the TRD Pro trim level of the new Tundra until halfway through the model year. Why? Because the company is fine-tuning its unique powertrain. Every 2022 Tundra TRD Pro will boast the truck’s top-trim powertrain: the i-FORCE MAX hybrid. This powertrain adds an electric motor/generator for regenerative braking and to smooth out shifts.

2022 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro

The only 2022 Toyota TRD Pro vehicle we cannot whole-heartedly endorse is the Sequoia. Traditionally, the Sequoia is the SUV equivalent of the Tundra. But while the 2022 Tundra gets a much-needed redesign, the 2022 Sequoia got left behind.

This latest Sequoia still rumbles along with an outdated, naturally-aspirated V8. This 5.7L powerplant gives up both fuel mileage and power to Ram’s 5.7L HEMI V8. This SUV also rides on leaf springs instead of rear coils.

The Sequoia TRD Pro may look the part–with the same forged BBS wheels and roof rack as the 4Runner–but most 4×4 enthusiasts will wait until the model catches up with the Tundra in 2023. Toyota has teased the next generation of the Sequoia TRD Pro and it looks gnarly!
