Here’s The 2023 eRay Electric Corvette
Here’s what we know right now about the coming electric 2023 eRay Corvette. You know that GM is on a march towards electrification. In the case of the C8 Corvette, is it a death march? Based on how well the Mustang Mach-E has done so far we’d say probably not. Still, the eRay won’t be all-electric. But it will feature electric motor aids.
First off, as we’ve seen with so many other hybrids/plug-ins this will be quick. And fast. It is the nature of plug-ins to have instant power and torque. And all of that power and torque will be transmitted to all four wheels.
That’s right, the eRay will be all-wheel-drive
That’s right, the eRay will be all-wheel-drive. A Z06 won’t be able to keep up with the eRay. It will be based on the LT2 6.2-liter V8. It will also have an eight-speed dual-clutch just like the Z06. But there will be an additional two 50+ hp AC electric motors attached to the front axle. The main reason for this location is that the C8 Corvette is packaged tightly. So there weren’t a lot of places to nest two electric motors.
All of this will combine for 600 hp. At this point we don’t know if it will be hybrid, plug-in, or charge the batteries through regeneration only. What is known is that one of the reasons for the eRay’s existence is due to emissions. Specifically, to lower said emissions. So, part of the purpose of the eRay is to make it environmentally-friendly with the corporate emissions numbers.
The eRay will utilize the Grand Sport wide body
The eRay will utilize the Grand Sport wide body. We took liberties with those massive side air-intakes but rumors mostly confirm it will keep them. The frontal area will be more closed-off, however. Some have suggested that the C8 body is too busy. Some love all of the vents and strakes while others wish it was cleaner and leaner. Here’s your chance to see it without the air intakes and with a much less aggressive front end.
Nobody is taking any stabs at MSRP. It won’t be anywhere near the $60,000 base price. But it probably won’t hit the $100,000 threshold. At least we hope. So what do you think? It takes a village and decades to establish a brand’s heritage. It can be pulled out from under GM in a heartbeat should it make mistakes with said heritage. We hope for the sake of Corvette that this is going to go well. Otherwise, it will be a case of what GM did to Cadillac in the 1970s, and it has never gotten its mojo back again.
