Jeep resurrected its Wagoneer SUV nameplate for the 2022 model year. The new sub-brand’s lineup included both the entry-level Wagoneer and the luxurious Grand Wagoneer. These vehicles improved on the Ram 1500 chassis with independent rear suspension and options such as full-time 4WD and air suspension. For 2023 the Wagoneer will add another technological improvement, a turbocharged six-cylinder. This “Hurricane” I6 engine is both 7% more powerful and 15% more efficient than the naturally-aspirated HEMI V8. But this premium engine will only be available on the $65k Wagoneer Series II and higher trims.

Does every 2023 Wagoneer have the Hurricane I6 engine?

While Stellantis is debuting its V8-replacing I6 “Hurricane” engine in Jeep’s 2023 Wagoneer, not every Wagoneer will get the I6. The entry-level Wagoneer will have the 5.7-liter HEMI V8, while the Wagoneer Series II and III will get the 420 horsepower Hurricane.

The HEMI-powered Wagoneer makes a respectable 392 horsepower. Reviewers have always said that the HEMI V8 makes more than enough power to effortlessly propel Jeep’s largest SUV. When you combine this with its tuned steering and independent rear suspension, the entry-level Wagoneer performs relatively well for a 6,300+ pound SUV.

Can you get a 2023 Grand Wagoneer with the HEMI ‘392’ V8?

The 2023 Wagoneer engine lineup gets even more confusing if you also consider the luxurious Grand Wagoneer model. The entry-level Grand Wagoneer does not come with the 420-horsepower Hurricane I6–or the 5.7-liter HEMI V8. The Grand Wagoneer Series I is equipped with a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 it shares with the Ram 2500, Jeep Wrangler 392, and all Dodge’s “Scat Pack” muscle cars.

In the Grand Wagoneer, this 6.4-liter HEMI makes 471 horsepower. The Grand Wagoneer is also the only vehicle to combine the largest HEMI V8 with Ram’s mild hybrid eTorque system. This technology combines the motor’s starter and alternator into a single electric motor, connected to the V8 by a serpentine belt and capable of some regenerative braking. While it doesn’t improve fuel economy as much as a traditional hybrid, it does smooth out the engine’s automatic start/stop function.

The high-output Hurricane 510 is restricted to the Grand Wagoneer luxury SUV

When Stellantis announced the new Hurricane I6 engine, it announced a high-output version targeting 500+ horsepower. This more powerful Hurricane is engineered to replace the powerful 6.4-liter HEMI. It is debuting in the upper trim levels of the Grand Wagoneer SUV, and is not available in the standard Wagoneer.

Are you are dreaming of the new Hurricane I6 engine’s high output (HO) variant? This incredible new engine features two turbochargers to reduce turbo lag, and produces 26 psi of boost. The result is 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque–from a 3.0-liter engine. Sadly, you’ll need to shell out at least $95,735 for the 2023 Grand Wagoneer Series II to get this engine.

That said, the Hurricane I6 must be cheaper to produce than the HEMI V8. The 2022 HEMI 6.4-liter V8-powered Grand Wagoneer Series II started at $98,640.
