Here’s What Driving the Ford F-150 Hybrid is Like
The 2021 Ford F-150 Hybrid is finally hitting the streets! Now we can get an idea of how well the Ford PowerBoost Hybrid performs against the gasoline-powered and diesel options. We also get to see how the refreshed interior and tech feel.
The F-150 Hybrid takes a spin around town
The team at AutoBlog got their hands on the new PowerBoost Ford F-150 Hybrid to see what it’s like, and they seemed to really enjoy it. In fact, they said it was the most impressive everyday pickup truck that they have ever tested. But this statement does not include the beefy Ford Raptor or Ram 1500 TRX.
To put it simply, the Ford F-150 Hybrid performs like a powerful truck. It doesn’t have issues that other hybrids have, such as awkward braking transitions between regenerative and hydraulic operation, no fussy vibrations, and no delayed revs under hard acceleration.
However, it can feel heavy at times like a massive diesel truck. It also gets the same fuel economy as the 3.0-liter diesel Power Stroke engine, despite having a lot more power. The diesel engine provides 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. The PowerBoost Hybrid engine provides 430 hp combined and 570 lb-ft of torque.
The team mentioned that compared to gasoline-powered options, the F-150 Hybrid is much more responsive and takes less prodding to accelerate. The nimble turning radius and handling make it an excellent option for driving around town. Plus, it’s perfect for longer trips and camping adventures too.
How is the Ford F-150 Hybrid interior?
The 2021 Ford F-150 interior has much-needed upgrades in terms of comfort, functionality, and tech. The system was upgraded from Ford Sync 3 to Sync 4, which is much easier to operate. Plus, the 12-inch touchscreen provides an excellent view of vehicle reports and entertainment features.
However, the touchscreen and infotainment controls are hard to reach from the driver’s seat. Despite that one negative aspect, the new steering wheel and cleaner center stack provides a modern design.
You can spring for the max recline front seats that fold nearly flat for power naps too. Also, the new table option known as the Interior Work Surface deploys over the center console, providing a flat surface for laptops, notepads, and more. Now in the rear, under the seat, you can access full-width storage under the seats. It locks and folds flat to provide space for larger cargo items.
We have to mention the Pro Power Onboard generator
The 2021 Ford F-150 Hybrid can be turned into a mobile power station with the built-in generator. You can add the generator to the gas-powered options, but it’s fully utilized with the hybrid powertrain.
With the PowerBoost Hybrid, the maximum output of the generator is increased to 7.2KW. This upgrade comes with 30-amp, 240-Volt in bed service, and four 20-amp 120-Volt outlets. There is enough power to run your entire campsite for 85 hours on a full tank of gas.
On the way to your campsite, you can charge electric bikes and other devices. The truck can be left on idle while powering devices and also locks. If a short is detected, it will automatically shut off to protect your gear.
