If you’re shopping for a mid-size sedan, then it’s likely that your top two picks are the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. And we wouldn’t blame you, after all, they are both reliable, fuel-efficient, and sensible choices that will last you for many years. But did you know that they are both really safe as well? Here’s a video from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).

Honda Accord and Toyota Camry safety ratings

The 2021 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are among the safest sedans currently in the market. As you can see in the video above, the structural rigidity in both cars is top-notch and there’s a visual that you and your passengers will remain safe in the event of most car accidents. According to the IIHS, both the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry received a five-star overall crash test rating and even scored the highest marks in all of the other categories as well.

The other categories include “frontal crash,” “side crash,” and “rollover,” so that should bring you some peace of mind when it comes to picking either one. However, just note that the IIHS did award the Toyota Camry a “Top Safety Pick +” award for 2020, but the Honda Accord barely missed the mark, but is still considered a “Top Safety Pick.” Apparently, the minor discrepancy lies in the “headlights” category in which the Camry received a “Good” and “Acceptable” rating, while the Accord scored “Acceptable” and “Marginal” instead.

Honda Accord safety features

When you look at the roster of standard safety features on the Honda Accord, it’s easy to see why it scored such high safety ratings. Some of the most notable safety features that you can find even on the base LX trim are:

  • Four-wheel ABS
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Traction control
  • Child safety locks

Additionally, every Honda Accord comes with the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assist features. Those features include the collision mitigation braking system, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and a frontal collision warning. With all of these systems in place, you can be sure that you and your family will be safe even if you opt for the entry-level model.

Toyota Camry safety features

The Toyota Camry is equally as safe as the Accord and then some, considering it scored well in the “headlight” category. Just like the Accord, it’s loaded with standard safety features in what Toyota likes to call the “Star Safety System” package. The most notable features include:

  • Vehicle stability control
  • Traction control
  • Anti-lock braking system
  • Electronic Brake Force Distribution
  • Brake Assist
  • Smart Stop Technologies

Additionally, the Toyota Camry also has its own suite of driver-assist features that the automaker calls “Toyota Safety Sense P,” which includes features like a pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, radar cruise control, and lane departure alert. Same as with the Accord, you can get the base model Camry and still feel safe knowing that all of these passive safety systems will keep you secure should an accident happen.
