The Honda CR-V has consistently been one of the best small SUVs on the market for years. The CR-V has trailed behind the Toyota RAV4 in sales for years as well. The CR-V is getting a major redesign for 2023. Here’s why the redesign won’t help it outsell the RAV4.

The latest Honda CR-V model year will be a major improvement. The CR-V has been falling behind some of its rivals in terms of updates, so the redesign is well-needed.

The 2023 Honda CR-V comes standard with a collision mitigation braking system, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, and road departure mitigation. It also comes with standard blind-spot warning. Blind-spot warning is a feature often reserved for upper trim level models.

The new Honda CR-V model year will feature a new exterior design similar to the 2023 HR-V’s new design. It comes with a 7.0-inch standard infotainment system screen. The previous model came standard with a 5.0-inch standard infotainment screen. While this isn’t a huge upgrade, few consumers will complain about more screen real estate.

The 2022 Honda CR-V starts at $26,800. Kelley Blue Book claims that the 2023 model year should start at around $28,000. The CR-V hasn’t outsold the RAV4 for years, and it’s unlikely to. Despite the CR-V’s many upgrades, no small SUV has been able to topple the RAV4 from its throne during its recent run. The Toyota RAV4 outsells its rivals because it has a long history of reliability.

The Toyota RAV4 is exceptionally reliable

The Toyota RAV4 is one of the longest-lasting small SUVs in its segment. ISeeCars features the RAV4 on a list of long-lasting SUVs. RAV4 models retain their value over time better than many of the nameplate’s rivals.

Since RAV4 models have historically been so reliable consumers trust the small SUV over many of its competitors. Kelley Blue Book praises the RAV4 for its fuel efficiency, roomy interior, resale value, and many standard features.

The Toyota RAV4 is available in a whopping six different trim levels including a TRD Off-Road trim. The CR-V comes in five different trim levels, and the Japanese automaker has yet to debut an off-road version of the small SUV despite the recent uptick in off-roading vehicles. Toyota has been the top dog in the small SUV segment for a long time. Even the redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V will have trouble outselling the RAV4.

The Toyota RAV4 outsells flashier small SUVs

The Toyota RAV4 isn’t as flashy as the new 2022 Hyundai Tucson or as luxurious as the Mazda CX-5, but it outsells those small SUVs. The RAV4 has proven that it doesn’t have to best the quickest, most fuel-efficient, or even the best-looking small SUV to dominate in sales. The 2023 Honda CR-V comes with plenty of great upgrades, but it isn’t likely to outsell the Toyota RAV4.
