Honda Envisions 50% of All 6th Generation CR-V Sales to Be Hybrid Models
Honda has introduced the 2023 Honda CR-V as its sixth model generation. Compared to the previous generations, the new CR-V trims are bigger and have the latest tech features and sharper designs. Additionally, this automaker plans to have 50% of its sales as hybrid models. Will the company realize its goals with this brand-new CR-V?
Key features of the Honda CR-V trims
According to Car And Driver, the redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V has four trim levels: Sport, EX, EX-L, and Sport Touring. The Sport trims have two electric motors and a 2.0 liter inline, while the EX and EX-L have a turbocharged gas engine. The hybrid power offers these CR-Vs quick acceleration and a sporty feel.
The EX and EX-L models have a standard setup comprising a 190-hp turbocharged, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable automatic transmission for front or all-wheel drive models.
The new hybrid models have a higher output of 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque compared to the previous version’s 212 hp and 232 lb-ft. This is done by combining the four-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine with a pair of electric motors.
As Forbes reports, the updated 1.5-liter turbo engine in the CR-V EX and EX-L trims offers extra refinement and enhances emissions performance and 190 horsepower. Its torque is a maximum of 179 lb-ft. The enhancements in these models include a high-response turbocharger, high-efficiency, and 4-2 exhaust port cylinder that maintains peak power over a wide range of rpm. These models also feature a significant reduction in engine noise.
The new Honda CR-V has refined real-time AWD and an intelligent control system that helps enhance traction management on slippery roads such as mud and snow. This system relays up to 50% of engine torque to the rear wheels.
For the first time, the 2023 Honda CR-V will include hill descent control to boost off-road capability and power on slippery or steep declines. In this case, drivers will have the freedom to choose speeds ranging from 2 to 12 mph.
Honda wants 50% of new CR-V sales will be hybrids
Honda has an ambitious plan to ensure that 50% of its sixth-generation CR-V sales are hybrids. The plan may become a reality because consumers are shifting to green vehicles considering the recent spikes in gas prices. The redesigned CR-V hybrids are part of Honda’s plan to move to electrified vehicles.
According to Honda Auto News, the assistant vice president of American Honda, Mike Kistemaker, said the Honda CR-V trim levels are designed to help the automaker achieve its objective of selling 50% hybrids for the new generation. These hybrids will have more efficient gas-electric setups.
The EX and EX-L CR-V trims will include the turbo 1.5-liter engines, while the Sport and Sport Touring will be available as hybrids only. The Sport and Sport Touring models will be more appealing with black wheels and a different rear fascia and grille.
There are also rumors that an all-electric version of the Honda CR-V is in the works, although the company is yet to release an official statement regarding this matter.
Notable features of the redesigned Honda CR-V
The 2023 Honda CR-V will include structural changes to its exterior to offer enhanced protection in case of crashes. It will also feature a new airbag design to minimize severe brain trauma due to accidents.
Other notable features of the 2023 Honda CR-V include a spacious interior, smart technology, a larger touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and a digital instrument display.
Additional features include a standard Honda sensing system, traffic sign recognition system, new wide-view camera, low-speed braking control, new traffic jam assist, and bolder styling for Sport and Sport Touring trim models.
