Honda Motor Company has announced it is recalling 761,00 vehicles to replace fuel pumps that potentially can result in crashes due to stalling. In the US that amounts to 628,000 Honda and Acura models built between 2018 and 2020. Honda says there have been no reports of accidents or injuries as a result of the fuel pump issues. This may or may not be related to the three previous recalls over fuel pump issues in the past two years. More on that in a bit.

Those models affected include the 2019-2020 Honda Accord, 2019 Accord Hybrid, 2019 Civic Coupe and SI Coupe, 2019-2020 Civic Hatchback, 2019 Civic Sedan and Si Sedan, 2019 Civic Type R, 2018-2019 CR-V, 2019 Fit, 2019 HR-V, 2019-2020 Insight, 2019 Odyssey, 2019 Passport, 2019 Pilot, 2019 Ridgeline, Acura MDX, RDX, and TLX models. That’s almost the entire range of vehicles Honda sells here. 

Honda and Acura fuel pumps can have cracked impellers leading to pump failure

Fuel pumps have been found with cracked impellers which can lead to fuel pump failure. If the fuel pump fails the car will stall out which could lead to a crash. Owners of affected vehicles will begin to receive notices starting in mid-May according to Reuters. 

If you feel you have one of these Honda products that might be affected you can go to the NHTSA recall website, plug in your vehicle’s VIN number, and see if it is included. Or Honda has a dedicated site for recalls which also requires your VIN number. 

Honda has a history of fuel pump issues dating back to 2019

Honda has a history of fuel pump issues dating back to 2019. There were two fuel pump recalls then that affected over half-a-million vehicles. Then in 2020, another 136,057 vehicles were recalled for fuel pump problems. It is unclear whether some of the current vehicles being recalled were also part of the 2020 fuel pump recall. 

Needless to say, there have been a number of fuel pump-related recalls over the past two years. If you have any Honda or Accord made in the last three years do yourself a favor and go to one of the sites mentioned above. With so many Honda products involved there is a chance yours could be on the list. Those with affected vehicles will be directed to their nearest dealer where the fuel pump will be replaced at no charge.
