Honda is late to the electric vehicle party in America. Whether the automaker is fashionably late or not is your call. Regardless of the brand’s tardiness, it has big plans to move into the electric future. Honda has set some major milestones and goals for 2030. The company is betting on the Honda Prologue electric SUV to lead the charge in 2024.

The Honda Prologue is coming in 2024

Honda’s new battery electric vehicle, the Honda Prologue, will be released in 2024. The Prologue has been teased, and the Japanese automaker is starting to give the world more details on its exciting new EV.

The Prologue won’t be Honda’s first electric vehicle sold in America. The company briefly produced an electric version of the Honda Clarity, but it was quickly axed after its poor reception. The nail in the coffin of the Honda Clarity EV was its poor range. The electric vehicle could only travel for 89 miles before needing to recharge. That’s even less than the Mazda MX-30’s measly 100-mile driving range.

Honda realized it needed some assistance producing a sucessful electric vehicle, so it reached out to General Motors. General Motors experienced early success in the electric vehicle space with the Chevy Bolt in 2017. Critics loved the Bolt’s capability and affordability. Ironically, the Bolt nameplate has become one of the most controversial electric vehicles ever produced after a billion-dollar battery fire debacle.

Honda is still partnering with GM to create an EV despite the American automaker’s epic failure. General Motors is determined to majorly impact the electric future with nameplates like the Silverado EV and Equinox EV. A press release from Honda claims that the EV’s exterior design suggests an adventure-ready SUV.

Will the Honda Prologue be an off-road vehicle?

Giving the Honda Prologue some off-road capability would be a great way to address another area that Honda lacks: off-road vehicles. Japanese automaker Toyota produced plenty of vehicles capable of taking the road less traveled. The Toyota Tacoma is a legendary off-road truck. Toyota now offers several off-road trims for different truck and SUV models.

These off-road trims often add suspension and tire upgrades, and skid plates to make vehicles more capable on trails. Honda is less likely to produce a true off-road vehicle and more likely to produce an affordable family SUV with mild off-roading capability.

The automaker could offer all-terrain tires and a suspension upgrade to make the Prologue better suited for off-road obstacles. There’s no telling whether the Prologue will be a real off-roader or not, but Honda could score major cool points if the EV can hold its own on a trail.

How much will a Honda Prologue cost?

Kelley Blue Book claims that the Honda Prologue is estimated to start at around $40,000. Since the bZ4X landed at $42K, the Prologue’s price is likely to mirror its competitor closely. According to Car and Driver, the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq will share the Ultium battery platform with the 2024 Honda Prologue.
