When searching for a new mid-size truck, it’s easy to want to go for the top trim. And in the case of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma, that trim is the TRD Pro. The TRD Pro package has long been the ultimate off-road version of the Tacoma, but it is also the most expensive. That might lead you to consider a more affordable option, such as the Tacoma SR5. So, how do these two trims compare?

What does SR5 mean on a Toyota Tacoma?

In the past, SR5 stood for “Sport Rally Five” on a Toyota vehicle. This signified some off-road prowess and other sporty features. Now, the SR5 trim is one that sits above the base Tacoma SR model.

With the 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5, you get features such as fog lights, leather-trimmed interior, and available dual zone automatic climate control. The SR5 Tacoma is also available in a variety of configurations. And that makes it pretty versatile depending on your specific needs from your mid-size truck.

Also notable about the Tacoma SR5 is that it is available with two different engines. These engines include a 2.7-liter four-cylinder powerplant with 159 horsepower and 180 pound-foot of torque. For an additional fee, you can opt for a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.

The TRD Pro is the ultimate 2023 Toyota Tacoma

With the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, buyers get a mid-size truck that is ready for off-road use right from the factory. This pickup boasts a locking rear differential, FOX Internal Bypass shocks, and an improved exhaust system.

It is also only available with the V6 engine and four-wheel drive. Better yet, for those who want to row their own gears, you can still get it with a six-speed manual transmission.

Unfortunately, the TRD Pro is only available with a five-foot bed, and it is not cheap. It has a starting MSRP of $46,685, and that is before options. Because of that cost, this is certainly not a truck that is for everyone.

How do the two compare?

In terms of a comparison, these mid-size trucks are built for two different reasons. The Tacoma TRD Pro is for someone that plans to off-road fairly often, and wants a pickup truck that looks the part.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma SR5 is for the driver who wants more features than the base Tacoma offers, but might not need the same level of capability. At the same time, this Toyota truck does have a thriving aftermarket community.

If you have the budget, it is entirely possible to upgrade a Tacoma SR5 for off-road use. Especially because you can get it with 4WD. But, doing so will require some leg work. If you do want something cheaper than the TRD Pro, but don’t want to forego off-road goodies, the TRD Off-Road is available.

At the end of the day, the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and the Toyota Tacoma SR5 are both solid trucks. The question comes down to what you intend to use your pickup truck for.
