How Do You Fold the Windshield on Your Jeep Wrangler?
The Jeep Wrangler and its predecessors have a history of modularity. That mechanical malleability extends all the way to folding windshields, a feature that defined the shape of the first Willys MB and Jeep CJ2-A of the 1940s. However, unbeknownst to many a Jeep driver, modern JK and JL Jeep Wranglers will also allow you to fold down their windshields. So, just how do you drop your Wrangler’s windshield?
Depending on the generation of your Jeep Wrangler, folding down your windshield can be a cinch
So you want that old-school Willys look for beach cruising or bouncing about on your property in your Jeep Wrangler? I get it. Fret not if your Jeep is of the newer persuasion. Many Jeep Wrangler owners with YJ or TJ generation models will already know that they can fold down their windshields for the classic, flat platform.
For instance, with the YJ, owners can simply remove the bottom bolts on the lower end of the interior windshield bracket. Then, remove the bolts that connect the upper structure to the windshield frame. After that, your windshield will drop freely. I suggest taking care not to break your off-roader or lose your patience with corroded hardware.
Believe it or not, it’s even easier for older Jeeps like the popular CJ-7. For many CJs, dropping the windshield is as easy as removing two plastic handles at the base of the interior windshield brackets. Of course, we’re talking about a classic Jeep here. There’s a chance the hardware will be tight and resistant.
Today, the latest JL and JK Jeep Wranglers still allow owners the versatility of folding the windshield. Better yet, dropping the glass isn’t all that much more difficult than it was 30 years ago. Your JL may have even come from the factory with a toolkit and instructions for the task. Of course, you’ll have to remove the wipers and remove a few interior bolts. However, after that, you’re ready to fold down your windshield, secure it, and hit the trails.
