How Does the 2020 Toyota Tundra Stack Up Against the 2020 Chevy Silverado
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado is one of the top three best-selling trucks in America and known for its capabilities, features, and reliability. The 2020 Toyota Tundra with its off-road TRD Pro trim and good resale value seeks to be a strong competitor for the Silverado. Kelley Blue Book recently took a look at both trucks to see how well the Tundra does when compared to the Silverado.
Does the Tundra have what it takes to compete with Silverado? Or is the Silverado still the clear winner?
The 2020 Toyota Tundra
Toyota is known for the build quality of its vehicles. The 2020 Toyota Tundra is a capable, rugged hauler with six trims to choose from and a good resale value.
The Tundra has a powerful V8 engine and a wealth of standard safety features according to Car and Driver. It’s popular, stylized off-road TRD Pro models blend an already rugged truck with trail-ready gear specific to the model and a lifted suspension. Standard TRD models are also ready to take all your rough-terrain adventures. There’s a lot of space for storage including passenger space in the back for crew cab models.
The Tundra isn’t without its flaws. It’s the oldest truck in its class and showing its age. It also has the worst fuel economy in its class. That combined with its crude handling makes it a less-than-ideal candidate for a daily use truck.
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado
One of the most recognizable trucks on the road today, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado comes with loads of customization options and a distinct, stylized exterior.
Unlike the Tundra, the Silverado offers a selection of potent, fuel-efficient engines including the popular Duramax diesel according to Car and Driver. The interior offers a super comfortable ride and it’s pleasingly quiet. There’s a nice selection of driver-assists like adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. While it’s capable when it comes to towing or off-roading, the Silverado also makes a suitable daily use truck.
Maybe the higher Silverado trims can’t keep up with the high-luxury alternatives of peers. But it’s strong, capable, and enough truck to keep most Chevy fans and truck enthusiasts happy.
The better truck is …
While Toyota has a solid contender with the Tundra, it hasn’t yet achieved the mass-market success that Silverado has. There have been updates to Tundra over the years according to KBB, but not enough to be competitive in the U.S. against its domestic offerings. Despite its age, the Tundra has some solid features including its powertrain, off-road models, and resale value.
According to KBB, future models with greater fuel efficiency, upgraded style, and more gears in the box would be very much appreciated.
The Chevy Silverado was all-new in 2019 when it became bigger and more dynamic than the models before. The new Silverados have a longer wheelbase for greater comfort in the cabin. There’s more head and legroom inside the Silverado than the Tundra and it has an impressive lineup of engines to choose from. The infotainment system in the Silverado is user-friendly and a favorite with the KBB team.
The only Silverado flaw that the KBB team pointed out was the fact that you have to select higher trim levels to get many of the driver-assist features. According to them, that drives up the price quickly.
The 2020 Toyota Tundra is an impressive truck but it’s not enough to overtake the Silverado as one of the top three trucks sold in the U.S. With the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado’s recent update, it’s the better truck. It offers a nice selection of engines, including a turbo diesel, and transmissions that are eight or ten speeds as opposed to just six. Silverado also has greater cabin comfort and a lower base price making it the winner of this matchup.
