The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX was unveiled earlier this week and while it’s safe to say that it’s probably the most extreme trucks to ever hit the market, some may be wondering what it has to offer. We already know that it will be up to date with all of the tech-savvy features that we have seen in the rest of Ram truck lineup including an available 12-inch infotainment system, a huge lift, and lots of suspension travel. Let’s not forget that the main highlight is the large supercharged engine that’s under the hood. It pumps out over 700 horsepower, but just how fast is the Ram 1500 TRX?

The Hellcat-powered truck

If you have been studying up on your Ram 1500 TRX specs over the past few days, then you’re probably already up to speed on just how powerful this truck really is. For those not in the know, the Ram 1500 TRX is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter, HEMI V8 engine that pumps out an earth-shattering 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. According to Ram, the 1500 TRX is able to get to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds and down the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds. That’s super quick considering it weighs 6,350 pounds.

How fast is the Ram 1500 TRX?

Of course, there is a difference between a vehicle being “quick” and it being “fast.” The term “quick” refers to the vehicle’s ability to accelerate at a rapid pace while the term “fast” refers to the speed that it can achieve. For example, if a car can go down the quarter-mile in 12 seconds, but only hits a top speed of 90 mph, then it’s quick but it’s not that fast.

In the Ram 1500 TRX’s case, it can get to 108 mph at the end of the quarter-mile, which is fast, but of course not as fast as the Dodge Charger Hellcat, which was able to get down Car and Driver’s test track in 11.9 seconds at 124 mph. If anything, we’ll blame it on the TRX’s weight, since it’s obviously not the horsepower that’s bogging down the speed.

As such, Ram rates the 1500 TRX’s top speed at 118 mph, which again, isn’t very fast. But this truck wasn’t made for top speed runs and drag races. And in case you’re wondering, the 1500 TRX’s main rival, the Ford Raptor, was able to get down the quarter-mile in 13.9 seconds at 99 mph, according to Car and Driver. So the Ram 1500 TRX is definitely much quicker and faster.

It’s not just fast, it’s versatile

Building the fastest production truck on the planet is one thing, but making sure that it handles all of the elements is another. Fortunately, Ram knows a thing or two about making its trucks versatile and gave the 1500 TRX a 2-inch lift over the other trucks in the lineup. And with 11.8 inches of total ground clearance, the 1500 TRX is able to not only crawl over rocks with ease, but it’s extra ride height also enables it up to 32 inches of water fording.

But when it’s not racing down a dragstrip or treading through water, the Ram 1500 TRX can go over some sweet jumps, thanks to its built-in “Jump Detection” feature. This feature can detect when the truck is airborne and reacts in milliseconds, adjusting the engine torque, transfer case, gear selection, and the damping rates to ensure a safe optimal landing. But if you plan on buying one of these trucks but don’t plan on any racing, water fording, or jumping, then you might want to stick to one of the lesser extreme trucks, like a Chevy Colorado.
