Like many other automakers, Hyundai is driving towards an EV future, and one of its latest additions to the EV market is the Ioniq 5, which is an electric SUV. That being said, the Korean automaker is also the owner of Genesis, which makes luxury cars, and Genesis recently introduced the GV60, which is also an electric SUV. Since Hyundai owns Genesis, many customers are wondering if the 2023 Genesis GV60 is just the luxury version of the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, and what’s the difference between the two electric SUVs. 

A look at the specs of the Genesis GV60 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5

Off the bat, since the Ioniq 5 is supposed to be a cheaper and more conventional car, its specs are going to be generally worse than the GV60’s across the board. For example, according to Car and Driver, the standard Ioniq 5 has a single motor that gets 168 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. That motor is paired with a 58.0-kWh battery pack, and this gives the car a range of 220 miles.

In comparison, the GV60 gets two motors as standard, and combined, they make 314 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque. Since the Genesis has two motors, it also gets all-wheel drive as standard. This dual-motor powertrain is paired with a 77.4-kWh battery, and that allows the GV60 to get 248 miles of range as standard. 

That said, Hyundai offers a 77.4-kWh option for the Ioniq 5, and it’ll boost its range to 303 miles when it’s paired with a single motor. Currently, Genesis doesn’t offer a longer range option for the GV60. When it comes to charging, both EVs are also very similar. They both can use DC fast charging to go from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.

Once again, since the Genesis is a luxury SUV, its interior will unsurprisingly be fancier than the Hyundai’s. Not only does it have a clean-looking and comfortable interior, but the GV60 is loaded with some fancy equipment. For example, it has a 12.3-inch touch screen display, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster display, and a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, all as standard. It also has some unique stuff, such as a facial recognition system. 

The Ioniq 5’s interior is also clean and modern looking. Obviously though, while the GV60 has leather components, the Ioniq 5 will use cloth instead. It’s not all bad, though. While the GV60 has things liked heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, the Ioniq 5 does come standard with heated front seats, but not a heated steering wheel. The Hyundai gets a 12.0-inch touch screen and a 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster display as well. The Ioniq 5 also gets slightly more cargo capacity than the GV60 gets, but they’re both loaded with a lot of standard smart safety features. 

Here’s how they are priced, and where they’re available 

Since the GV60 is a luxury SUV, its price tag is significantly higher than the Ioniq 5’s. According to Car and Driver, the Ioniq 5 starts at about $41,000 before any incentives. In comparison, the GV60 starts at just under $60,000. This means that the Genesis is roughly $20,000 more expensive than the Hyundai. 

There’s also a big difference in terms of the cars’ availability. The Ioniq 5 is currently available in most places in America. The GV60, however, is still in its early rollout phase. As a result, the GV60 is currently only available in select places, including California, New York, and New Jersey.
