Dodge is an iconic American brand name, and a lot of the company’s popularity has to do with its history and the company’s older models. Nowadays though, Dodge is owned by Stellantis, and the automaker has only a few models in its lineup as many models were moved to different brands, like Ram, or discontinued entirely. In fact, despite SUVs becoming more popular, Dodge only has one SUV right now. Here’s a look at that lone SUV and Dodge’s upcoming SUVs.

The 2023 Dodge Durango is currently the only SUV that Dodge offers

Up until recently, Dodge actually had two SUVs in its lineup. There was the Journey, which was a midsize SUV, and the Durango, which is a full-size SUV. That being said, the Journey was struggling with sales, and after just over a decade of production, Dodge pulled the plug on the SUV in the 2020 model year.

Technically speaking, Dodge is still selling the Journey, but only in Mexico and it’s just a rebadge of a Chinese SUV called the Trumpchi GS5.

As a result of that discontinuation, the Durango is currently the only SUV that Dodge is selling in the U.S. On top of that, Dodge hasn’t given the Durango a major update in a long time.

The Durango is currently in its third generation, and this generation started with the 2011 model year. That said, Dodge has given the full-size SUV a lot of minor updates across the years, including a facelift in the 2021 model year.

An overview of the 2023 Dodge Durango

Overall, the Durango is a well-built SUV that comes with a lot of engine options. According to Dodge, the 2023 version of the SUV starts at about $38,500 MSRP. Since the Durango is a full-size SUV, it also has three rows of seats, and this allows the car to carry up to seven people. The Durango starts with a 3.6-liter V6, and it gets 290 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Dodge offers three V8 engine options on the Durango, these get between 360 hp to 710 hp. That being said, the most powerful engine option is the Hellcat engine, and Dodge is only producing a limited amount of those Hellcat-equipped Durangos.

That powerful version of the Durango won’t be cheap either, costing over $90,000. With the Hellcat engine equipped, the Durango can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

Even without those powerful V8s though, the Durango is a good SUV. It comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, as well as a 7-inch digital gauge cluster display. The seats are spacious, and the front seats are heated standard. Additionally, the Durango can tow up to 8,700 pounds, and it has a max cargo capacity of just over 85 cu. ft. 

Dodge will be introducing more SUVs in the future though

To be fair, the Durango won’t be Dodge’s only SUV forever. The Hornet is Dodge’s latest SUV, and it’s coming to American dealerships in the near future. The main unique feature about the Hornet is that, in addition to a traditional gas-powered engine, the Hornet will also be sold as a PHEV, or plug-in hybrid. 

The Hornet’s PHEV powertrain gets 285 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, and its battery will allow drivers to go 30 miles in battery-only mode. Dodge gave the Hornet a feature called PowerShot, which will allow the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds.
