Innovative brand Volkswagen has been behind the pack in recent years when it comes to electric vehicles. While many others already have lineups full of EVs and hybrids, Volkswagen has seemed to take its time fitting into the future.

But Volkswagen isn’t as behind as most would like to think, recently and heavily investing its future in an all-electric lineup. So how many electric VWs will there be in the next few years?

Volkswagen’s big investment in electric cars: ambitious 2025 goals

A few years ago, Volkswagen released the ambitious plan to turn its future into an all-electric one. The brand originally had plans to produce one million EVs by 2025.

But things change quickly in the world of EVs and VW’s innovative technology is taking it farther than it first anticipated. According to Volkswagen’s press release, the brand is ahead of the curve and is changing its forecast. VW’s newest goals include adding another 500,000 EVs to the lineup, for a total of 1.5 million vehicles in the “ID.” family by 2025.

Plans for 2025 also include 36,000 new charging stations and an overall less-costly EV market, as VW begins to sell its EV platform to other companies to reduce competitive costs.

This means that not only will VW reach its original goal two years earlier than expected, but that VW has ambitious plans to keep growing into an EV-powerhouse. Investing more than 50% of its budget on EVs, VW plans to sell around 22 million electric vehicles through 2028 and will be a completely carbon-neutral company by 2050.

What Volkswagen’s current EV lineup looks like

According to Volkswagen’s website, the only electric car available for purchase is its e-Golf, the electric version of its popular four-door hatchback. But this year, in 2020, VW plans to introduce its new ID. family to the world.

This new ID. electric family will include the recently debuted ID.3, a small, zippy four-door. According to The Verge, the ID.3 hatchback should be available mid-2020, boasts up to nearly 350 miles of range, and will cost just more than $30,000. But the year is also bringing at least one other EV to VW’s lineup, each more impressive than the rest.

According to VW, the first-ever all-electric SUV will make its debut this year and begin production by the end of 2020 and hit dealerships in 2021. The ID. Crozz crossover SUV is said to have a top speed of more than 110 miles per hour and a battery that can charge up to 80% in just 30 minutes. It is also expected to have a range of more than 300 miles.

What’s coming next?

But VW already has at least two other concepts nearly ready for production in its ID. family. One of the most exciting up-and-coming EVs from VW is the ID. Buzz, which “brings back fond memories of Volkswagen past,” in the form of what appears to be a classic VW bus. But this futuristic VW bus is entirely electric, loaded to the brim with impressive technology, and is set to start production in 2022.

Nostalgia isn’t the only thing VW will be offering in the future, with the recent debut of the ID. Vizzion concept vehicle. Slotted to start production in 2022, the ID. Vizzion has even grander plans for the future. According to VW, the ID. Vizzion sedan has ambitious plans of being the first EV built without a steering wheel or pedals. It will also be a level-5 fully-autonomous EV that will travel for a range of around 300 miles.
