There’s a lot to like about the Chevy Silverado. Opt for its diesel engine, and this year’s model offers some pretty impressive fuel economy ratings. This year’s Silverado can tow up to 13,300-pounds when properly equipped too. But how many miles will a Chevy Silverado last? After all, as much as the Silverado may have to offer, that doesn’t really matter if the truck can’t go the distance.

Is the Chevy Silverado reliable?

Unfortunately for the Chevy Silverado, it’s earned some pretty mixed reliability ratings. In fact, according to Consumer Reports’ data, this year’s model earned itself a lowly one out of five predicted reliability rating. Consumer Reports gave both the 2020 and the 2019 Chevy Silverado a one out of five reliability rating too.

But according to Repair Pal, the Silverado earned a 3.5 out of 5.0 reliability rating, ranking it fifth out of 17 for the full-size truck segment. Much like Repair Pal, J.D. Power gave the Silverado a higher reliability rating than Consumer Reports. Overall, J.D. Power says, the 2021 Chevy Silverado earned a ‘Great’ quality and reliability rating. The 2020 and 2019 models earned the same ‘Great’ quality and reliability rating.

How many miles should a Chevy Silverado last?

The question remains, however. How many miles can you expect a Chevy Silverado to last? After all, if you’re able to look past the Chevy Silverado’s mixed reliability ratings, the chances are that you want the Chevy Silverado of your choosing to last a decent amount of time too. Fortunately, according to this study, you can expect the Silverado to last a reasonably long time.

In fact, after analyzing more than 11.8 million cars sold in 2020 to determine which models have the highest percentage of vehicles reaching 200,000-miles, iSee Cars reports that 2.1% of Silverado models sold in 2020 have reached that 200,000-mile milestone. Pretty impressive, right? But according to iSee Cars analyst Karl Brauer, the Silverado’s overall longevity is pretty easy to explain.

“On average, pickup trucks are almost twice as likely to reach 200,000 miles with a 1.9 percent average for the segment, which is nearly double the average for all vehicles. Pickup trucks are commonly used as work vehicles and are likely to accrue more miles than a typical passenger car while often benefitting from more consistent preventative maintenance and necessary repairs.”

The Chevy Silverado isn’t the only pickup that’s able to reach 200,000-miles and beyond either. According to iSee Cars, the Toyota Tundra, Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Titan, and Ford F-150 are among the longest-lasting pickups available. So if you can’t look past the Silverado’s mixed reliability ratings? Know that there are other options available.

The key to keeping your truck on the road for miles to come

Now, reaching that 200,000-mile mark isn’t going to be easy. In fact, it is going to take some effort on your part. According to Consumer Reports, the best way to ensure that your truck reaches that 200,000-mile mark is to keep up on regularly scheduled maintenance.

Consumer Reports explains, “Even missing one oil change can contribute to premature engine wear, or cause damage and reduce the chances of your car remaining reliable for long.” So while visiting the local mechanic shop may not seem like the most exciting activity? Doing so will help keep your truck on the road for miles to come.
