Unfortunately, not all model years have fared so well, including the 2018 model, which earned a paltry one out of five reliability rating from Consumer Reports.

The Ford Expedition earned similar reliability ratings from Repair Pal. However, Repair Pal added that the Expedition faces an average annual repair cost of $861, which is higher than what most SUV owners spend on repairs every year. That being said, Repair Pal reports that while repairs tend to be more severe, major repairs are uncommon for the Expedition.

How many miles a Ford Expedition will last

While reliability is kind of a toss-up, there is some good news. According to a study from iSee Cars, the Expedition is one of the longest-lasting SUVs out there. After analyzing a whopping 15.8 million cars sold in 2019 to determine which models have the highest percentage of vehicles that surpassed 200,000-miles, iSee Cars found that 5.2% of Expedition models sold in 2019 reached 200,000-miles and beyond. Compare that to a 0.9% average for the segment, and that’s pretty impressive.

But, a good percentage of Ford Expedition models were able to do even better than that. Of the longest-lasting vehicles out there, iSeeCars analyzed which are most likely to reach 300,000-miles. And, as it turns out, 0.2% of Expedition models sold in 2019 are likely to reach 300,000-miles. Not bad, right?

Does the Ford Expedition hold its value?

But as far as the Expedition can go, can you count on it to hold its value at the same time? Well, according to CarFax, most vehicles depreciate about 40% after five years. Unfortunately, CarEdge reports that the Ford Expedition depreciates approximately 58% after five years and has a five-year resale value of $26,841. That means you shouldn’t expect the Expedition to hold its value all that well.

Are there better options out there?

Here’s the thing, while the Ford Expedition can certainly go the distance, if you’re a stickler for reliability and would prefer an SUV that holds its value pretty well, then it might not be the best fit for you. Fortunately, there are alternatives to the Expedition that are well worth your consideration. 

Take, for instance, the Toyota Sequoia. It earned higher reliability ratings from Consumer Reports, will only depreciate 49% after five years, and according to iSee Cars, 9.2% of models sold in 2019 were able to reach 200,000-miles. So if you aren’t quite ready to settle for the Expedition? You can rest assured knowing that there are other options available.
